Re: INIT: Command is respawning too rapidly.

so your not even getting the boot up messages. that doesn't depend on the os at all.

which means either the system is broke or the console isn't working because of wrong setting, bad cable, broke, etc. and that you have tested the console on another system, so it isn't your problem.

I don't know if the baud rate/etc is configurable for the boot up. I hope you know what your settings are. the 9600 baud rate is the default. if someone has changed them, we cant help you there.

other then that it would seem you have a problem with your system hardware. i hope you have a support contract for that.

the only other way i'd know is to put your hard drives in another system and mount them there and do a little poking around.

but your hard drives are probably fwscsi and probably have an old version of lvm/etc. so you'll need a compatible system to work with.
and after doing that you could have even more problems such as data corruption so that is a last resort.

if you have a recent backup, try restoring it and see what you find there. not going to fix your system, but might help in finding what the problem is.

Re: INIT: Command is respawning too rapidly.

I found a manual that says:

...
The console default path address will default to the GSC slot address if a graphics console
card is installed in the SPU
...

so the console will be on graphics, if installed.

rip out this card and see what happens.

Hope this helps!
Regards
Torsten.

Re: INIT: Command is respawning too rapidly.

Your system is definitely in very bad shape.

The majority of your startup scripts FAILed.

Some of the erros I see indicate that some of your VG00 LV's may not be mounting correctly / at all.

In the output you pasted I just see VG00/lvol1, vg00/lvol3 and vg00/lvol5. There typically should be lvol1 (/stand), lvol3 (/), lvol4 (/home), lvol5 (/opt), lvol6 (/tmp), lvol7 (/usr) and lvol8 (/var) in vg00.

The one that could be really problematic is lvol7 (/usr). If that isn't mounted then a LOT of commands will not work.

I'm not sure what to do to get your keyboard on the laptop working, maybe someone else can help with that. You've got to be able to interact somehow so that you can try to fix this problem.

This should have nothing directly to do with the run queue. It should be the amount of CPU usage expressed in units of 10%, where A == 100%.

Re: INIT: Command is respawning too rapidly.

Grayh,

For keyboard issue, you need to fix terminal settings in hyperterminal.
Use following:

5. When the COM1 Properties dialog opens, use these settings:
o Bits per second = the baud rate / data rate setting of your DPI serial
adapter
o Data bits = 8
o Parity = None
o Stop bits = 1
o Flow control = None
6. Click OK.
7. When the main window for HyperTerminal appears, select File > Properties in the
menus.
8. Select the Settings tab.
9. On the Settings tab, set Emulation to VT100.
10. Click OK

or
HyperTerm, COM1, 9600, 8-N-1 XON/XOFF

setting terminal to vt100 you should be able to type...

If u are able to type then better take server in single user mode while only boot disk is connected.

Your vg01 has apparently taken some major damage. Unfortunately, your /usr and /opt filesystems seem to be on the damaged portions of vg01, so this damage has seriously crippled the OS.

If /usr is not available, that explains the "INIT: Command is respawning too rapidly" error messages. The console login prompt is produced by /usr/sbin/getty, and that obviously cannot run if /usr is not there. That also would explain why most of the startup scripts are failing: they require /usr/bin/ksh or some other tools from /usr to execute successfully.

Basically, you have two ways to access the machine now: either get it to boot to single-user mode or start it up using the recovery mode of the installation CD. Both of these require a working console. Your vg00 seems to be fine, so the single-user boot should still provide you with a shell access.

You probably must TOC the server again to get it to boot to single-user mode: the current state seems like a dead-end. As there is no getty running on the console, the system is incapable of receiving any meaningful input from the console.

Exactly how did you get the console messages (in the message you posted at Aug 29, 2008 19:35:32 GMT)?

Does the server have a display and/or PS/2 keyboard connected? If it has, try using them instead of/in addition to Hyperterminal & serial cable: the system might prefer them over a serial console.

If that does not help, disconnect any PS/2 mouse/keyboard from the server, make sure the laptop is connected and Hyperterminal is running, and TOC the server again. Most PA-RISC machines with integrated keyboard connector (like the D-class) will automatically switch to accepting input from the serial console port if there is no keyboard directly attached to the machine at the time it's doing self tests.

After successfully getting to the single-user mode, your next problems will be:

- How to get replacement disks, suitable for your old D-class (to replace the failed disk(s) of vg01)

- If the LVs of your vg01 are mirrored, you may be able to recover some of all of the data by activating the vg01 volume group with "vgchange -q n -a y vg01". But you should prepare to restore from backups. (You *do* have backups, right?)

Hi Grayh,

Have you tried hyperterm settings and managed to take server in single user mode by intrupting normal boot process this time ?

Re: INIT: Command is respawning too rapidly.

Hi,

have you got the access on console?
Seeing lots of things here, I believe we can summarize the situation on HP-UX problem as follows:

- as suspected originally you have the message

"INIT: Command is respawning too rapidly..."

due to some services are not starting;
- some services are not starting due to filesystems problems on vg00;

Next action: go in single user mode and fsck all vg00 filesystems, then try to mount them and if all is ok then try

/sbin/rc

to check if services start.

If all of this is ok then 'init 3'.

HTH.

Best regards,
Fabio
