The question is...do I realy need reboot to install the tape drive???

after installaing the hardware, run this command
#insf (this will install the necessary software for your hardware)
then run the command
#ioscan -fnC tape

Normaly I run the #insf -e command after the ioscan. I got the wrong info before this...

whenever you plug anything into your server which doesn't need reboot, the above command works prerfectly.

at least in theory you should never open a powered scsi bus to prevent unpredictable behavior or damage. Even if it works most of the times, it's not supported.

Normally I turn off the drive 1st before transfer it to another machine. Anyway thanks
