IPL error: bad IPL checksum

Hi all,

I am trying to install HP-UX 11.00 on a J200. When I boot from the CD I get the following:

Main Menu: Enter command or menu> bo alt

Booting...
Boot IO Dependent Code (IODC) revision 0

IPL error: bad IPL checksum.
Error Reading IPL

I can read the 11.00 Install CD and it boots on another system. Please help.

Take care,
frank

Re: IPL error: bad IPL checksum

Thanks Ken, however I did a sea(rch) and used both the path to the CD and bo alt (which on my J200 defaults to CD) with the same unhappy results.

Take care,
frank

PS I am amazed by your quick reply -- thanks!

Re: IPL error: bad IPL checksum

Assuming your "alt" path is pointing to the CDROM this could only mean ..
1- you got the wrong CD
2- CD is damaged
3- bad CDROM drive or SCSI connection problem
Sounds like 3 to me ..

Re: IPL error: bad IPL checksum

bo alt tells the system to go look at the alternate boot device that does not mean your cd. Interupt the boot process and pick the option to show bootable devices and find your cdrom drive.

Re: IPL error: bad IPL checksum

I think your CDROM is not an alternate boot device. Maye be the DDS drive is . WHta you gotta to do is boot the interrupt process and then do a search . IT will show you a list of bootable devices . Find your CDROM's hardware address there and then at tthe main menu prompt type in :

bo

Say no when it asks to interact with ISL .
Then it should boot off the CD .

Re: IPL error: bad IPL checksum

S.K. Chan,

Would it be possible for me to read from this internal CD-ROM and still have a bad SCSI connection?

Re: IPL error: bad IPL checksum

Ashwani,

I am sorry for the confusion my bo alt has caused ... however on my J200 the bo alt device is CD. In any event I tried your suggestion (again :-) and after a few seconds of blinking CD-ROM light activity I got the same "bad checksum" message.

Take care,
frank

Re: IPL error: bad IPL checksum

Hi,

do you have another bootable CD to try? Can you at least read CD's on your J200 machine?
If it weren't for STRESS I'd have no energy at all

Re: IPL error: bad IPL checksum

I agree with Ionut. You should understand that PDC and IPL levels use "dumb" subroutines, and if they see errors they simply report - "error" and halt in opposite of OS drivers which try to recover error first.
Possible causes: SCSI bus (cable, termination), CD-ROM device is bad.
As Ionut offered please try to boot from another (two-three, to be sure) good known CDs. If you'll not succeed, replace SCSI cable, terminator at the bus end, and then drive

Re: IPL error: bad IPL checksum

My thanks to: S.K. Chan and Eugeny Brychkov for pointing me to a bad CD-ROM drive. Just finished replacing the drive and now I am installing 11.0. Thanks for teaching me that even though you can mount and read from a CD -- it DOES NOT mean you can boot from it!
