Is DLT Drive Bootable

I have a K260 system that we have added DLT drives to recently. I seem to remember HP at one time telling me that in order to boot off a DLT tape/drive you have to be careful which SCSI device the DLT is attached. Does this sound familiar to anyone?

Re: Is DLT Drive Bootable

Hi Rick,

If you have a bootable DLT in the Drive, you can boot from the Drive. Just like when you specify the path to boot from any other SCSI device, you have to specify the SCSI path of the DLT drive to boot from there.

Hope this helps.

Hi,

If you specify correct h/w path while bootinf you can boot with DLT... Make_recovery tape...Sounds familiar..?
Good Luck..

Re: Is DLT Drive Bootable

Hi Rick,

I've already done that one time... When your system's booting, you have a "Press any key within 10 seconds" prompt that appears, when you hit a key this ables you to choose from what device you want to boot. The command that allow you to do that is far far away in my memory... So do the "help" command to see what could you do... I think it sounds like "boot " but I'm not sure...

To find the H/W path, before rebooting, do an "ioscan -C tape" to scan every io device on your box, the "-C tape" option is to specify the class in your case it's a tape, but u can use disk, scsi... Or u can only do an "ioscan" and find out your DLT device...

Eventualy you must have done a make_recovery to put the /dev/vg00 on your bootable tape. If u have not that, u can do a "make_recovery -A" on a blank tape, this will take all you files, LVM configuration,... everything you need to boot up your system... Do a "man make_recovery" . The make_recovery command comes with IGNITE-UX!

So good luck...

Re: Is DLT Drive Bootable

As long as you can see it in PDC, it is.

Run "ioscan -kfnC tape" and record the HW path of your DLT drive.

To boot from your DLT you have to stop the machine at boot when it says something like: "To override ... press any key within 10 secs"

Then issue the SEA command (stands for search), it will search for potential boot devices and give you a list almost like this:

P0 ........ 0/0/6/0.6.0
P1 ........ ...........
.. ........ ...........
Px ........ DLT HW PATH

If your DLT displays in the list, you can boot from it with the command BO Px, where x is the number beside the DLT HW path in the SEA results list.

Hope this will help,

Re: Is DLT Drive Bootable

Hi,
On the FAQs for ignite-ux,

http://www.software.hp.com/products/IUX/faq.html#media

5-3, it says that booting off a HP-PB scsi interface isn't supported.

Re: Is DLT Drive Bootable

If what HTH says is true this would leave you with the option of an HSC card plugged into the optional port on your core IO card.

I know that what HTH says is true on the MPE OS for the HP3000.

Re: Is DLT Drive Bootable

You can check it.

Create a Make_recovey tape in your DLT.

Reboot box, and stop on "To override ... press any key within 10 secs"

Use SEARCH IPL. This will list availables devices for booting.

Previusly, fo lssf /dev/rmt/DLTFILE and note the hardware path. ISL will use it for identifying devices.
