LDAP server for Iplanet 4.1.x

Can someone tell me if it is possible to use a
Microsoft Active Directory Server as the LDAP server for iPlanet 4.1.x?
My interest is in mapping information contained in client certificates to user information stored in LDAP entries for purposes of authenticating clients for access to all or parts of a web site. Also, any documentation that you can point me to on this subject is most appreciated.
