Live DVD for HP-UX

Hi All,

I read a news about LiveCD (DVD) created for Solaris 10. Likewise, Why dont we try and create a LiveDVD for HP-UX ? Experts, please share your ideas. We shall take this to next level.

Thanks,
Arun

Re: Live DVD for HP-UX

Hi ArunVIjay,
Nice initiative and nice topic.
but i have some questions:
1. what is liveCD? i read in the link and it said "A live CD (or liveCD) is an operating system (usually containing other software as well) stored on a bootable CD or DVD that can be run directly from the CD or DVD drive, without installing into permanent memory, such as a hard drive."

but in that case, already as OS should be installed there. isnt? cold install is not possible. right?
i know some applications cd's usually autorun in windows environment.
2. what is opensolaris? why sun did like that when solaris is good in enterpriseUnix market?
3. what is the advantages of liveCD? any pros and cons?

An HP-UX Live CD/DVD would only be a boon to me if it could be run on commodity PC or laptop.

Sekar, My answers are inline :

If you have a LiveCD, you can boot from it if your OS is corrupted. Also, you can recover files, and mount partitions, etc..etc..

2. what is opensolaris? why sun did like that when solaris is good in enterpriseUnix market?

From Solaris 10, SUN opened source code. It is called OpenSolaris. Sun wanted to give OS free and make $$ from support.

3. what is the advantages of liveCD? any pros and cons?

Re: Live DVD for HP-UX

Shalom Arun,

It sounds like an enhanced Core OS CD.

Currently HP offers such content on media that is not connected with the Core OS.

If you are proposing we create one that would indeed be technically possible but would require HP's permission.

Still its a good idea.

Re: Live DVD for HP-UX

Good day Arun!,

Is it the same idea like a bootable Live system through CD or DVD, consisting of hp-ux os. Just like knoppix live cd.

Good idea ,

Re: Live DVD for HP-UX

Hi Arunvijai,

I use LiveCDs like bartpe and knoppix frequently to fix or backup my notebook. This is a windows system - this is reason enough.

But what do you think should be the reason for a HP-UX livecd? I don't really feel I need it. And btw, if you run a recovery shell from the install media, you have something similar (ok, with less posibilities). Last time I used this is many years ago on a non-mirrored system.

Hope this helps!
Regards
Torsten.

Re: Live DVD for HP-UX

dunno, seems live cd's only make sense on x86 plarforms. to try out a new os/release without installing it first to see if you like it.

knoppix is a great troubleshooting and rescue tool, but again is tied pretty much to x86 platform OS's (linux and nt).

with hpux you can always boot from cd in single user mode, which is enough 99% of the time.

not to mention, that if you are able to create a hponnux (hpux-knoppix ;) ), you are not even allowed to distribute it because of the hpux license.

Re: Live DVD for HP-UX

An HP-UX Live CD _may_ make more sense if Itanium systems become common. There are times when I need a new system temporarily (for a few days or weeks) and I wish I could bring it online without going through an hour long install process. But... that's were virtual machines come in.
