Lost /var/spool/lp

I have a client whose /var/spool/lp sits on top of an an protected disk. That disk went bad so all of his printer configs. He does have a backup of all the printers and their IP addresses. Question is how do I rebuild /var/spool/lp? I could not find an lp tree in /usr/newconfig or elsewhere. I was expecting it will just be recreated and I could just batch my printer recreation but nada.

/var/spool/lp/* is not recreated and scheduler will not start.

No backup of /var/spool/lp either. I am thinking of copying a /var/spool/lp from a different machine but want to find out first if there is a way the system can recounstruct (albeit empty) a /var/spool/lp tree or a atemplate somewhere..

Re: Lost /var/spool/lp

I would try a simple restore with the print spooler shut down.

Then I would match permissions to a working machine prior to turning the print spooler back on.

Re: Lost /var/spool/lp

No backup of /var/spool/lp SEP.. just a backup of all printers defined.. in a file containing printer names and IP addresses:

printer1:126.45.33.12
printer2:126.45.33.14
..
printern:A.B.C.D

I was successful in copying over (CPIO) a /var/spool/lp tree from a working system purging the defined printers and redefining the printers.. back to normal.

I was just hoping there is a newconfig tree (blank/fresh) for /var/spool/lp that I could use but it appears there is none.

Re: Lost /var/spool/lp

Hi,

There are no templates for contents of /var/spool/lp like others. You should be fine in coping the contents from another working machine and then redifining all printers etc.

The other machine should of same OS revision.
