Moving an EMC meta-volume from one port to another

I have a spare meta-volume that I need to move. Currently it is on port 13a & b which is setup for NT servers. I need to move it to port 16a & b that is used for HP servers. I need to know if this is possible.
Thanks for any information on this.

Re: Moving an EMC meta-volume from one port to another

Hi Brain,
This is not (strictly speaking :-) a HP-UX related question. Moving volumes from being visible on one port to another is done in the configuration of the storagebox itself. Only your EMC CE can do this, so you'll have to contact EMC.

Yes, it is possible. Either call EMC in to do it or do you have EMC SDR installed on a win2K PC somewhere ? this will allow you to move it yourself instead of getting EMC to do it. We move all our volumes around like this using SDR.
Im from Palmerston North, New Zealand, but somehow ended up in London...

Absolutely EMC Control Center Symmetrix Disk Reallocation (ECC/SDR). There is probably someone at your site who does this, a Storage Admin. Find him/her.

Yes, it can be done by Symm.support. But!!!
after all changes are done you need to find this new hardware on your HP-server.
You need to do:
1. #ioscan -fnC - to find "new device".
2. #insf -e - to create new log.device
for "new device"
3. #rmsf -a - to remove dev-files
without real devices,
associated to it.

Re: Moving an EMC meta-volume from one port to another

I know it is not an HP question but our production, developement, and data warehouse servers use this Symm for the database. From the responses I received it sounds like I may not be able to do this without a bin file change, and a few thousand $$$. I will see if the level of Control Center I have will let me do this.
Thanks for all your responses! It great to know that even though this wasn't strictly an HP issue this forum supports the peripherals too.

Re: Moving an EMC meta-volume from one port to another

Brian,

Just to add to the above:
SDR (Configuration Manager) was a purchasable in ECC 4.x and below. In ECC 5.x and greater it falls under the umbrella of the Symmetrix Manager license. I'd have to check our contract again to be sure but I believe this is standard with an ECC purchase, so if you're running 5.x or greater you should have SDR capability.

If that is the route you go, double and triple check everything before you commit to any changes....especially if you have multiple hosts connected to the Symm.

Re: Moving an EMC meta-volume from one port to another

Believe you me, I did double and triple check the MV I wanted to move. I did move this to the port I wanted and the HP server now sees the disk. On a MV, shouldn't I see the size of the disk once I have run insf -e and added the disk to a VG?

Re: Moving an EMC meta-volume from one port to another

It is quite possible to do this, if you ECC manager on a workstation and can also be done from the hpux command line as long as you have the symcli commands installed and the license in which to run it.
Do you see the LUN(s) in the ioscan output ?

The size can be seen by running 'diskinfo /dev/rdsk/cxtydz' You should also have a gatekeeper device. For flexibility you should have broken up the 'meta' in to smaller LUNs.
