New disk has 0 size

I have installed a new 4Gb disk. the server is running 10.20 (800).
The problem is that although it sees the new disk in ioscan and sam. I cannot create any volume gorups on it as it says it has 0 size.

> diskinfo /dev/rdsk/c1t9d0
SCSI describe of /dev/rdsk/c1t9d0:
vendor: SEAGATE
product id: ST34573WC
type: direct access
size: 0 Kbytes
bytes per sector: 0

Any help is greatly appreciated

Re: New disk has 0 size

Hi,
have did #pvcreate -f /dev/dsk/c1t9d0, still if you are seeing 0 bytes perform low level format(#mediainit -f /dev/dsk/c1t9d0) on that disk
never give up

Re: New disk has 0 size

ioscan -f
If you have online diagnostics installed
software.hp.com/SUPPORT_PLUS/
you can run a tools-info-run to get all
information on the hw.

Re: New disk has 0 size

If the disk has a 0 size, then chances are good that the disk is bad. I would go ahead and replace the disk. If it is an HP disk, place a hardware call, otherwise call the vendor you bought it from and have them send you a replacement.

Ok, you should do mediainit as ravi said

Re: New disk has 0 size

Hi Terry

Proceed like this

1.ioscan -fnC disk | grep c1t9d0 should tell you whether the disk is being sensed or not. Then do a insf -e.

2. Do a mediainit -f /dev/rdsk/c1t9d0.

3. pvcreate -f /dev/rdsk/c1t9d0.

with this you you should be able to get the correct size and the disk usable.

Re: New disk has 0 size

Hi Terry!
You should try what Manoj told you, but you can try to run a dd on that disk by doing:
"dd if=/dev/dsk/cxtxdx of=/dev/null bs=64"

if it gives something like:
23451+0 records in
23451+0 records out

it's OK. But if it gives some different values then it needs to be changed.

good luck.

Re: New disk has 0 size

When this happens to me, the disk is bad and I get HP to replace it.

Re: New disk has 0 size

ST34573WC
I'm just wondering how you have the drive connected. It could be a cabelling problem, perhaps incorrect termination or the drive may be incompatible with the slot you've place it in to.
I think more info is required on the disk and it's physical cableing.

Although, if it did work before, then it sure sounds like a disk problem.
