Re: NIS and NIS+

I'd however would use LDAP (also can integrate with NIS using LDAP-NIS gateway product).Used NIS for years, once tried NIS+ (very complicated as to me).LDAP can also integrate with Win2k Active Directory making all this a real dream of singe database source of hosts, users, groups, passwords etc for both *NIX and MsWin.

Re: NIS and NIS+

Thanks Zeev for the extra info. I am going through prev threads to get the whole picture.

As part of consolidation of users/groups I am planning to use NIS/NIS+/LDAP.

I will start a seperate thread for this.

thanks,
Umapathy

Re: NIS and NIS+

Hi

Youve got loads of docs to choose from above. The only thing I would say as a quick pro-con list

security NIS+ better than NIS
ease of use NIS better than NIS+
network load, depends on set-up NIS+ >> NIS if V secure
flexibility NIS+ is more flexible as you can split it into domains
OS NIS+ 11.x NIS is 10.X or more

As mentioned above NIS will integrate with LDAP.

Re: NIS and NIS+

Hi,
I hate to hijack this discussion but I need some help.
They set work up to use nis+ and then dumped it in my lap (i'm new there)

I have a simple problem or so it would seem, but I've been rtfm like crazy and cannot find an easy way to correct the spelling of the user's real name.

I'm getting to the point where I just wanna tar up the user's files and do a re-install
but that's a hassell in the long run

Can anyone offer any help with this?

Thank you
Jenny
