SOrry for the delay...the problem has been solved. It had nothing to do with the jre per se...the file system were created with some default options through Veritas which set the fragment size at 4096 while the block size is 8192. This file system contains numerous very small files. Once the file system was recreated with the proper fragment size, it is taking 20 minutes instead of 2 hours.
