PA-RISC to Itanium

Is an OS upgraded required going from 11.11 on existing PA-RISC to an Itanium upgraded? Is there a white paper on this topic?

Any help would be greatly appreciated....

Re: PA-RISC to Itanium

First, moving from PA-RISC to Itanium would be switching to an entirely different server. Second, Itanium is not supported on 11.11, it requires 11.23.

Re: PA-RISC to Itanium

Hi Allen,

OS upgrade is required. 11.11 will work on PARISC. For itanium you will need 11.23.

Re: PA-RISC to Itanium

If you are upgrading your hardware to Itanium, you will have to install the HP-UX 11.23 OS from scratch. You cannot upgrade from 11.11 and upgrade the hardware to itanium

Re: PA-RISC to Itanium

PA-RISC 11.11 and 11.00 binaries will run on IA64 11.23 through the aries emulator.

Re: PA-RISC to Itanium

Your best bet would be to migrate to new hardware.

This allows you to do a cold install and migrate your applications gradually in a controlled, normal process.

You could also try the upgrade-ux option on your 11.11 systems. This is complicated, and often fails and requires a make_tape_recovery backup prior to starting.

It also requires some down time.

It will leave you at 11.23 so the actual switch to Itanium hardware is easier. I was told that the newer PA-RISC servers use the same chasis and a system board switch might be a possible migration path. See your HP rep for more on that.

Re: PA-RISC to Itanium

Hi Allen

Itanium servers do not support hp-ux 11.11. We need to load 11.23 known as 11V2. Following link may be of help

Re: PA-RISC to Itanium

And if your current system is running some applications such as commerical databases, be sure to verify that your current software will run on Itanium at 11.23. Well behaved programs will be portable but then there are others...

Re: PA-RISC to Itanium

Sorry Allen,

I meant to tell that you need to change the OS from 11.11 to 11.23. In hurry I wrote upgrade. Sorry for the mistake.
