pax: write : I/O error

Hi All

I run a make_tape_recovery nightly, and this morning I have an email with an extract from the log showing:

* Preparing to create a system archive.

* Archiving contents of HOSTNAME via tar image to local device/dev/rmt/0mn.
pax: write : I/O error
pax: A write error has occurred.
WARNING: The pax command returned a non-zero exit status (exit status 1).
* Creation of system archive complete.
NOTE: The following files are in the list of files that were on the
system, but they are no longer present. These files are not
included in the backup:
/var/spool/cron/tmp/croutWZCa02077

======= 07/06/10 00:42:47 BST make_tape_recovery completed with warnings
Errors/Warnings reported on make_tape_recovery backup on HOSTNAME at Mon Jul 5 23:00:00 BST 2010.

Following this is an entry in the syslog:

Jul 6 00:42:45 HOSTNAME vmunix: SCSI TAPE: dev = 0xcd020040 I/O error during close

The local operators have cleaned the drive yesterday.

Any ideas?

Re: pax: write : I/O error

hi,

you oculd use to test the drive :

"HP StorageWorks Library and Tape Tools"

http://h18000.www1.hp.com/products/storageworks/ltt/index.html

or just use tar / pax to test if its possible to write and read from tape.

in most case if i saw this error the physical drive replacement was done.

we are using HP StorageWorks Array 5300 so the replacemnet of the Array or tape drive is very simple.

of you are using internal drives you need a downtime for this operation.

pax writes data fromn the disk to the tape. Since a write failed, the tape must be bad. Run your cleaning tape through the drive and use a new tape. If it still fails, you may have a bad drive.
