Re: Please Post Your ITRC Forums Issues for March 2003!

I was wondering about the long loads, but we have been having internal and external network problems at work. Sometimes I have to disconnect from the internal network and dial to my personal ISP to get better response.

Now if you actually look at what each page load has to do, then you will appreciate these forums.

Each message has to be found in chrono order, then each person has to be found with the correct hat, then all this info has to be formatted into HTML and sent out to the user.

Re: Please Post Your ITRC Forums Issues for March 2003!

Hi Ron,

you can test this phenomen by aborting your submit - as soon as you push submit botton your reply will be in the thread.
It is the ok from ITRC that takes ages (Sorry Dan) and so some times (15 GMT for example) some proxy-server says 'time out'.

So often there are two identitcal replies from the same person.

Hi Dan,

Morning doldrums again!! Since approximately 11:02 AM EST, page load times have been measured in multiples of minutes.

It took 224 seconds to open this thread, 159 to open this reply window, etc, etc.

And yes, other sites seem fine. I opened the docs.hp.com home page in 2.406 seconds while I was waiting.

Re: Please Post Your ITRC Forums Issues for March 2003!

Just reported this as "feedback" as well, but on the forums search page the HTML content that is handed to Mozilla browsers is broken. The blue table where you enter your search terms gets slid way over to the right of the page (with a fixed width, so scrolling sideways is required). The next table, which normally is centered immediately below the blue table, is then left-aligned with the left side of the window.

Re: Please Post Your ITRC Forums Issues for March 2003!

Hi Danno,

The slowdowns seem more than coincidentally regular to me.
The timing looks to be a scheduled event. Possibly a local cron job - although a cron job on another system that causes tremendous network traffic could do this.
Also check when scheduled backups run on these servers or servers sharing the same subnet.
The point being is that *something* scheduled appears to be hammering forum performance between 10-11 AM CDT.

Good Hunting,
Jeff

Hi T.G.

Yes, I did report you problem to the ITRC Support team. The document database is managed and supported outside of the forums team, so I let them know you were having trouble. You should submit a case to them or click on "contact hp" in the left navigation sidebar. Under "email hp", click the "ask a question" link. Make the appropriate selections and complete the form. You should be contacted for assistance by the support team.

Thanks,
Dan

Dan,

While this may seem like a worthwhile cause, to me it's just advertising and I don't think spam like it belongs on the Forums:

Re: Please Post Your ITRC Forums Issues for March 2003!

Dan,

Almost as if on queue, the morning slowdown has occurred yet again. Since I am accessing from home, I decided to see if it was something to do with my connection. To accomplish this, I went to one of the little online speed testing sites (while I was waiting on a page load from this site, mind you) and this is the result that I got for my connection moments ago:

2003-03-31 11:32:16 EST: 3034 / 235
Your download speed : 3034975 bps, or 3034 kbps.
A 370.4 KB/sec transfer rate.
Your upload speed : 235515 bps, or 235 kbps.

In short, I can almost guarantee you that the slowdown is NOT on my end.

Did you ever determine if there is some kind of scheduled job that is running about this time every morning as was suggested by Jeff?

I???m of a mind to think that he must be on the right track on this one???

Hi John and Pete,

The support team verified no jobs are running at the times you've indicated. They are still looking at other possibilities, such as capacity, etc. Sorry about this.... John, thanks for the added info.

Re: Please Post Your ITRC Forums Issues for March 2003!

Hi Dan,

Don't limit your search to just your systems, rather you need to look at least at the entire subnet(s) that these servers live in - if not all the way to/from the last hop (firewall?) in/out for our traffic.
Enlist the support of your network ops & firewall (Corp Security?) teams & have them setup network stats logging at that time period.
Hell it could be some yahoo in marketing that's scheduled a massive i-net search or something every day at that time. Or someone's copying a huge DB across the network everyday, etc., etc.
Can't just look in your little area of the playground, you should look at the whole school - especially the driveways in & out.

Ciao,
Jeff

Roger/Jeff...thanks. Jeff, I just used your school yard analogy with the team. Very nice. I know they were looking into other areas already, by I liked how you phrased it. :)

Re: Please Post Your ITRC Forums Issues for March 2003!

1. I am *sure* I answered to http://forums.itrc.hp.com/cm/QuestionAnswer/1,,0x0a4fb82b2d63d71190080090279cd0f9,00.html as first answer, but *poof* it's gone. I got an ack.

2. I have uncountable timeouts on asigning points with Mozilla [now at 1.3] (I don't even try with Opera). Eventually it passes on - let's guess - each seventh attempt. No fun. Other performance is acceptable.

Seconding Procura's observation about answering postings that don't appear. This happened to me yesterday, 3/31/03.

Also having an issue with the search engine links to documents this morning, they don't. 4/01/03.
