Re: Please Report Forums Issues! (10/2/2001)
today the forums have some other (or even new) problems. When trying to just open the forums home page I got errors, but when I deleted the "new 5-digit" in the URL I eventually got it. Seems like the use of the 5-digit-codes still has lots of problems - could the the server not just filter them out?
Just my $0.02,
Wodisch (who has to use $ instead of the Euro-sign as he is in moscow :-)

Re: Please Report Forums Issues! (10/2/2001)
A couple of enhancement requests and a bug.
Request 1) Please Please Please Please Please do something about how points are assigned. After starting the congrats thread for JRFs 15000 points, it was a pain the *** assigning points to the lot of folks.
Request 2) I think it would be nice to have the date and time that each question was originally posted and also the date and time of the last response to the question displayed. You could still have the questions that have the most recent responses at the top of the list, but there are times I'd like to see when the question was originally posted before I respond.
3) Now the bug: In my congrats post to Mr. Ferguson, you will notice that it has a magic answer icon even though no one has 10 points assigned. I think I figured out what caused it.
In the process of assigning points, I mistakenly assigned Rita Workman 10 points and realized it as soon as I clicked the submit button for the points. Once I got to the 'Assign Points - Acknowledgement' screen I hit the 'Back' button on my browser and reassigned Ritas points, giving her 3 points. It shows in the post that I assigned Rita 3 points, but it apparently still somehow sees the original 10 points that I assigned and thus put the magic answer icon. Rita's profile does not show that that answer is one of hers that's scored between 8 & 10 points. So I think there's a bug somewhere.......

Re: Please Report Forums Issues! (10/2/2001)
1. Assigning points one by one is really a pain task, user should have freedom to assign points to all the responces in one screen.
2. When the thread grows, and if the author responces back with latest status, we should know it by some way.

I have not looked for/in the thread you referred to, so I do not know whether or not 8 or more points were given.

Re: Please Report Forums Issues! (10/2/2001)
there seem to be still some "embedded" links in the replies, which do contain the old "4-digit-code" URLs... This keeps us from using those links (clicking on them, wait for the 404, delete the old 4-digi-code in the URL, press
Could you do some *global* substitution of "4-digit-code" with *nothing*, please?
Have not checked the "search" for a long time, but the speed of the forum's pages seems to be really improved :-)
I do have some issues with *cross-login* restrictions using my "european hat", still.

Re: Please Report Forums Issues! (10/2/2001)
Back to "business as usual" - I have new requests :-) (Sachin will complain if I did not have at least some in a while):
Since everybody is getting *golden hats* these days (and as JRF has already written), we will run out of "space" for those... and I would prefer to see all those at one glance! (Kathy and Paul will be there any minute, it seems).
It does show that the forums are very active, does it not?
There might be some *line* between the "multi-crowned" royals und us "simple royals", or different crowns for JRF, A.Clay, Stefan, Patrick, and Alex (these crowns of the tzars are not bad, I can tell you ;-) and for JRF we will need at least a kind of *halo* (Saint JRF!).
I might get this wrong but the recent statistics seemed to have actived even more forumers, as there are already some "men-without-hats" (and ladies, of course) who have claimed to be working on their resp. crowns!
So I call again for statistics, perhaps about:
- forumers at large
- hats
- points/time: overall, per recent year/month/day (hey Sridhar: that's for you)
- *hits* on the forums, perhaps by area/thread
- longest running thread
- most *bunnies*/thread or topic
And I would like to have more choices for "assigning points":
- smileys for the "congrats" and humor threads
- negative points for wrong/bad/unpolite replies (might need individual confirmation from your team!)
- perhaps even the chance to "exclude" a reply completely (again with confirmation)
- some additional state to "sort" the replies, when there are multiple replies of ten points worth
The third item would be some kind of "yellow pads" area on the "public profile", where someone could leave a message for that specific user (if permitted by the owner, of course), as I have seen quite some "this is for XXXX" threads!
Oh, and some complaint: I am still not able to add the "0" extension to the telephon number in my "user profile" (and I have never been before)... :-(

Re: Please Report Forums Issues! (10/2/2001)
The following discussion thread has *apparently* had all the contents deliberately removed from it:
http://forums.itrc.hp.com/cm/QuestionAnswer/1,,0x85c5cf38d6bdd5118ff10090279cd0f9,00.html
Was this by accident or was it done intentionally?

Re: Please Report Forums Issues! (10/2/2001)
Maybe a numbers of users accessing it at any time problem.
Anyway, Dan will find the pain of assigning points to a gaggle of answers if he ever replies to all these.

I'm back from an unscheduled "extended vacation" -- boy, do I have some points to assign! Not to worry, it will happen!
Also, thanks for the great and continual feedback. I am working on documenting what you have provided above for October. Standby for a new November thread.
**Paul, I have no idea why your message contents don't appear at the URL you posted. Perhaps the the contents were lost on the server -- I will check on this for you.

Re: Please Report Forums Issues! (10/2/2001)
Things seem to be running better since the upgrade, but today I noted something. Normally, I keep the browser at the forums page and just stay logged on (found it was easier than comming in every day). Today, I went and tried to reply to a post and was told that my login was not valid. I went and tried to logoff and was again told it was not valid. It seemed that when it went to verify login or logoff, it went to the europe site. I backed out to hp.com, came back in (looking for the us sites) to the forums. It did the same thing. When on this page, I then clicked on the Americas/Asia link, and then it let me log on. I'm not sure why it was shunting me over there, but I thought I'd let you know in case others were seeing the same thing.

Re: Please Report Forums Issues! (10/2/2001)
Can you encourage the person(s)who move posts out of one forum into another (especially when they don't even answer the question) to at least delete the post pointing out its been moved.
That way we all won't waste so much time opening up posts to find the question has been moved and often already resolved.
I know this can be done .... I just tried it myself.

Re: Please Report Forums Issues! (10/2/2001)
I wish I had a penny for every time I've been logged-off for no apparent reason. I'd be rich this week!
When I get logged off, I *often* find that I will receive 404-errors for every attempt to touch the Forum until I log-out of the ITRC at large. Then, and only then, I can move back to the Forum, *BUT* only if I don't login!!! That is, I am constrained to readonly mode. Eventually, the problem will clear, although this takes repeated attempts over 10-15 minutes.
This behavior is all new since the last "update" of the ITRC.
Regards!

Re: Please Report Forums Issues! (10/2/2001)
It's the same with trying to look at my Software Calls or trying to get to the forums, I have click at least 2 times before I get where I want to go on the IRTC.
When I tried to download the current GSP Firmware for my N4000 HP-UX Server, it is impossible to do. Even my SE from HP said they couldn't do.
I realize your having problems with your web page and I am able to get around most of the issues by just backing out or reloading the IRTC and to just keep trying by going a different route to wherever I want to go.
I still think you guys at HP do a great job with your web page.
As far as an idea's to improve it...How about a funny hat for the person who has the highest ratio of assigned points for answered questions? A lot of folks don't take the time to assign points and I think that is rude.

Re: Please Report Forums Issues! (10/2/2001)
I've had the exact same error message this week
for three days. For some reason due to the
upgrade it is has done something peculiar.
From my office PC (running IE4) doesn't work
anymore. My home PC has IE5.5. I upgraded
my office PC to IE5.5 and the problem has
been solved!
