Re: Please Report Forums Issues - August 2003!

Dan,

My monthly request list:

1) Fix the slow submit issue that causes so many duplicate postings and duplicate replies (get rid of java?).

2) Fix the inablility to assign points issue.

3) Pre-assign 0 points to all answers. This eliminates the whining about not assigning points and the obsessive pursuit of 100% point assignment ratios.

4) Create a new category under HP-UX for congratulations, humor and other miscellaneous off-topic threads so that those who don't wish to view these items can bypass them.

5) Provide the ability for a user to customize the forum subjects they view by setting up their own groupings (like: all of HP-UX,
plus Servers (9000), plus Workstations (hp-ux based), plus all of Storage - well, you get the idea).

6) Borrowing from JRF: could you please *not* preload "databases" (just because it is the lexicographically first item). Instead, make the user choose the correct category.

7) Show the poster's name in the reply window.

8) Limit the amount of space taken up by "masthead" stuff (headings, descriptions, rankings, etc at the top of the page) so we can actually see some questions.

9) Repeat the bread crumb navigation links at the bottom of the page so we don't have to page all the way up to the top of long threads.

Hi Dan

Could this category be a points-free-zone?

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - August 2003!

I absolutley agree with Mike,

this must be a POINT FREE Zone.
I concrat someone of selfless reasons not to earn points for that.

My 2 cents for that
I thing the forum etiquettes must be revised in that point.

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - August 2003!

And were do *I* get my points then, huh?

OK, I fully support Pete's wishlist, but want to add - again - my wish for relative page fills, so I get the full 100% width of my browser window used. I'm not in favour of having more than half of it filled with whitespace :(

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - August 2003!

And finally my list of wished-improvements:

- a direct link on the first page to this thread and to the succes thread of the month, to not have to search for them if needed.

- an ERP subsection of hpux, for talkin abount Baan, SAP, IAS, ONEWORLD and so on

- and improved search engine, in the last times our is almost useless

- the option to give out one's e-mail, if desidred, with an appropriate checkbox in the profile

- the chance to search also for points: in the search condition, also put a dropdown to select answer that was awarded with points, and how many

- new hats

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - August 2003!

Doesn't matter if there are points in the congrats zone. Anyone with large numbers of congrats points will show up in the profile.

Those with 1000 congrats points will not be considered "high quality" or whatever. I urge a go slow appoach to this kind of reconfiguration.

I think its more important to get the real bugs out of itrc. The search engine doesn't work right.

Example.

Looking for a doc on Integrating LDAP/UX and Microsoft Windows 2000 Authentication.

itrc search with manuals box clicked which supposedly finds docs at docs.hp.com

Account Management and Authentication

Gets nothing at itrc search

finds the exact document I wanted in docs.hp.com

Whats going on here.

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - August 2003!

Really got to agree with others about the Forum search engine being the number one issue. Too, too many missing links.

I repeat, too, too many missing links.

All since the upgrade.

Right now the multiple word search is inconsistent while the Boolean and phrase searches are non functioning or useless.

In short, this is the worst the Forum search engine has been for quite awhile.

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - August 2003!

Hi Dan:

Pete has done an excellent job of enumerating enhancements for which the community has been asking. I agree with all of them with one modification.

Pete suggests pre-assigning zero points to all answers in an effort to eliminte the whining about point-assignment statistics. Instead, simply eliminate the user-statistic entirely. Interestingly, the tracking of a user's point assignment rate was considered an "enhancement" about two years ago in response to the complaint that folks were wasting their time answering posts from authors who rarely, or never, rewarded the community's efforts! An old roommate of mine once said, "Ya pays your nickel, and ya takes your chance!". For my money, let's just stop the begging and the whining about points! It's just not professional!

I second Merijn's offering to reduce page white-space too.

As for the internal search engine, "search" is an oxymoron in this case. The so-called engine has been broken for longer than I can recall. It delivers items totally devoid of the keywords chosen and excludes relevant ones. It is clearly a case of "caveat emptor".

Regards!

James,

I'm flattered!

Your points point has been taken and will appear as a viable alternative in subsequent months' versions of "issues".

Hi Pete,

could you also add:
Repeat the bread crumb navigation links in the 'notify me' and 'disnotification' page.

Thanks a lot for the summary.

Volkmar,

Done!

All,

If you have an issue that could be put into one concise summary, I welcome the suggestions. I have to agree with them before I'll include them but I'm willing to consider anything. I think it will reduce some of the clutter in this thread and focus Dan and team on what we consider the top priorites.

Please have someone verify the date/time on the various servers. I believe that the time on some is incorrect. I am posting this message at 1729 EST (2129 UTC).

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - August 2003!

The 12:30-1:00 a.m. Central twilight zone for itrc had new features this time.

You'll notice the dupliate posts, not from me.

I got simple DNS failure when trying to visist at 12:54 AM Central. Several times.

If there is a backup window happening, just tell me and I'll find something else to do. The only reason I'm up is I have to do an emergency kernel change in production.

Grr. No Rollout is perfect.

Hi Dan.
Just the same as Merjin.
It may waste space and performance on your servers at a later point in time, if some replies will be more than double.
