Re: Please Report Forums Issues - June 2002!

Hi Dan:

Perhaps this is yet to come, but, the Pharaoh and Olympian are *not* described in the ITRC Forums "more about the point system" URL:

http://us-support2.external.hp.com/estaff/bin/doc.pl/forward/screen=estaffAssistance/sid=a04628ea0effd9dc7b?Page=file0002#forpoints

*However*, I do like the new spelling of "Pharaoh" ... ;-)

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - June 2002!

Pete: not sure if this is possible. I'll pass it along, but can't promise you much (sorry).

Patrick: the "dead" URL you describe is likely due to a message that along the way was *deleted* for one reason or another. The dead URL should not be appearing in the list, so it is likely a little bug. I've talked with the developers and they said it should not be there, so they'll get a fix out in the next patch. Thanks for pointing it out.

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - June 2002!

Dan,

For some reason or another, I no longer have a support number attached to my profile:

share/modify access privileges

Not available because you currently have no linked Support Agreements (System Handles) or Warranties.

reassign access privileges

Not available because you currently have no linked Support Agreements (System Handles) or Warranties.

I'm going to check with our admin group to see if a support number was deleted.

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - June 2002!

Hi Dan,

I have been trying to access the forums members list for entries under 'J'. Occasionally an error message does come up, but on trying this morning, a blank screen is displayed (apart from site details on the left hand side of the screen). Here is the URL:

http://forums.itrc.hp.com/cm/MemberList/1,,j!1,00.html

Date/time: June 13, 2002 at 0930 NZST

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - June 2002!

Harry, good to hear you are back in business.

Joanne, yes, the members list for "j" and "m" have grown to the point of timing out when trying to be requested. Also, "d" and "s" occasionally have trouble. This has been reported and we are awaiting a patch for this fix (sorry).

Thanks,
Dan

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - June 2002!

Hi Dan,

I'm not sure if anyone has asked for this before, but in the search, I wondering if we could have the facility to search by the category like an advanced search.

e.g. I want to search for omniback related postings
Category - Openview OmniBack + search string

e.g. I want to search for tape drive issues
Category - Storage, Tape Libraries and Drives + search string

Cheers

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - June 2002!

Hi Michael and Dan:

Interesting thought, Michael. In my opinion, the assignment of the appropriate category at post-time is poor at best. Personally, I would not limit my search to category (other than the "commumity"). Rather, this is why I want a search engine that will deliver unlimited responses. If I think that my query is too broad, I'll refine it. In fact, I may "know" that a particular item is around a certain time. Virtually unlimited responses with the ability to secondarily sort those by date is very valuable to me.

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - June 2002!

Hi Michael and Jim,

Great feedback. Jim has expressed his thoughts before on this subject. I will definitely drive this over to the team that manages the search tool (it is ITRC-wide versus forums specific).

Thanks,
Dan

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - June 2002!

Hi Dan,

Congratulations again for a job well done! :-)

One suggestion. :P It would be helpful indeed if tabs and spaces can be displayed as they are in the postings, perhaps through the use of
tabs in html, space.gif or some other mechanisms.

Hope this helps. Regards.

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - June 2002!

Exploring all those wonderfull new features (you know me by now, I cannot resist the temptation :) I found on http://forums.itrc.hp.com/cm/TopSolutions/1,,BR41967!1!questions,00.html (my questions asked) one entry I cannot follow:

Might this be the question I requested to remove? If so, howcome it still appears in the list?

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - June 2002!

Dan,
I am trying to login into the Asiapacific site.
by default it is taking me to the Europe site.
But when I click the link America/Asia Pacific it gives me a registration form.
Isn't there a option where I can login directly into the America/Asiapacific site.
This problem is there for a couple of days.

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - June 2002!

When I click on "forums" on the left of page, or "Forums" on the ITRC main menu, all I get is "Document complete", yet nothing changes. The only way I can get into the forums is by clicking on a URL notification I get via email.

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - June 2002!

Hi Carlos,

I think they changed the URL for the login screen. I, also, had to change my bookmark this morning. Did it the same way as you - went to www.itrc.hp.com & clicked login. I then set that URL as my new bookmark.

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - June 2002!

Hi Dan,

I had troubles posting an answer this morning. It was posted three times finally ( http://forums.itrc.hp.com/cm/QuestionAnswer/1,,0x8082107d277ad611abdb0090277a778c,00.html ). Can you remove the 2 'spare' answers?

I guess I was faving timeout issues somewhere along the posting process.

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - June 2002!

Hi Dan!

This is not an "issue" but rather a new feature suggestion.

I've said many times that "If it wasn't good, then it wouldn't be worth complaining about."

The corollary is that "If is wasn't good, then there wouldn't be a request for more!"

Hence, it would be interesting to offer the ability to view all of one's posts (replies and questions) and have them sorted in post date order *within* the number of points assigned. Ideally the sort could be toggled in ascending or decending point order.

The new, current division of replies rated '0-7' and replies rated '8-10' would persist. The default presentation when opening a user's profile would remain as it is now, too. The enhancement would be the addition of buttons to sort (ascendingly or decendingly) each division by date within points, analogous to the ability to sort replies of an individual post by post date or by score.

With my warm regards!

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - June 2002!

Hi Dan:

OK, real issue.

In the beginning of this forum if one posted a reply and it contained the escape [backslash] notation ("\") it was *removed* from the post. The workaround was to type *two* backslashes.

For a period of time, until now (?) this has been unnecessary. However, I just posted a reply that should have spanned three lines and instead ended up as one. WHY?

For example:

line-1 line-2 line-3
ended up as:

line-1 line-2 line-3

But does this?

line-1 \line-2 \line-3 \
...the last is/was posted with double backslash characters on each line...

Regards!

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - June 2002!

Dan-

I really like the improvments, but I've got another that I'd like to throw out there (gotta keep you guys busy).
I try to search for items first before posting. sometimes I find them. sometimes not. part of my problem is trying to come up with words that define the problem, especially when it is more specific than "install HP-UX 11.0". it would be nice to have something like AskJeeves has, where I could type in the question that I have and it would filter out the important words. It helps to think it out like I would ask someone as opposed to trying to think in terms of keywords only. Not a major thing, but I was just thinking that it would be nice (and maybe increase search usage, since you would be in general asking it the question). Just a thought.

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - June 2002!

Hi (again):

Oh, this is very broken...if I am not mistaken.

One *wants* the backslash preserved in posts in order to denote what often needs to be done in code!!!

HELP!!!

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - June 2002!

Hi All,

procura: the URL you are seeing is *dead* -- you are correct, it was deleted. It should not appear, so the developers will fix that in next patch.

Joel: next time try http://forums.itrc.hp.com -- this will allow you to be redirected to a known and working forums server.

Mark: I'll add your idea to the list for tracking, thanks.

Jim: Thanks for the idea. Regarding the backslash, you've got me -- I have no idea. I'll have to ask the team what may have caused that to happen./

Thanks,
Dan

PS: Jim, I had two backslashes above...and a space between last sentence and my "thanks". It dropped the last backslash and eliminated the space....hmmmmm.

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - June 2002!

Any thought about breaking up the "m" and "j" lists? Something like "ma-mm", "mm-mz"?

Afterall, those lists should be growing all the time and the problem will occur again at a later date.
