Re: Please Report Forums Issues - June 2003

I'm still promoting the idea of giving caps to people who DON'T give points, but continue to post questions anyway. How 'bout a dim bulb if they don't give points after 10 questions, a dunce cap after 25 questions, and a vacuum cleaner after 50?
If so, our friend filosofo would be a Hoover Bagless by now........

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - June 2003

Search functionality still doesn't work. The "exact phrase" choice is simply a farce. I acts as an "any word" search instead.

This is the BIGGEST down side of the forums. Quite frankly the search sucks. I tend to use google to search for itrc answers instead of the internal search since it is so unreliable.

Issue 2:

The submit javascript only works 1/2 the time. I have had to hit submit 3 or 4 times before it gives me the submission successful screen. The rest of the time IE logo spins for 1/2 second and the screen remains the same.

Requests:

In our profiles split the points received lists into 4 columns.

No points awarded, 0-3 points, 4-7 points, 8-10 points.

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - June 2003

Another request.

Can you set the search screen to select the ITRC forums when the search screen is referred to from the forums?

Or just set it on by default and let people "unclick" it if they don't want it.

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - June 2003

Hi

Reading the previous posts about searching reminds me.

The last couple of times I have used the search function, I have been directed to posts which have been moved. As clicking on the link only takes you to the 'family home page' this makes finding the actual post a real pain - a guess which page it might be on by date.

Therefore, please could the link take you directly to the question instead of the family page. I am fairly sure this has been asked for before, if so, I would just like to add my support to the cause.

Many thanks

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - June 2003

Dan,

Sorry, I just can't think of anything to complain about!

It seems like June is starting out way better than May, from a forum operations point of view.

I must say, I have always preferred Google Advanced Search http://www.google.com/advanced_search?hl=en over the built-in search utility. The key is to use http://forums.itrc.hp.com in the "site or domain" field. Since Google is a database / search specialist, one would think that they would be pretty good. Google does tend to run about 5 days behind, but for my searching, that does not really matter.

BTW, thanks for the new hat. Arrived last Sunday by Special Delivery, can you imagine...

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - June 2003

I have found Boolean somewhat effective when nothing else works.

It seems to me that there is some sort of precedence in the search where the term on the far left is most important and the data brought back is dependent on the order of the keywords in the search box.

This is a supposition from experience.

I find the itrc search engine quirky, where a patch sometimes does not show up when the patch box is checked but when you go to patches from the main window, you find it.

Quirky but effective. I'd like to see it work better, but have earned quite a few bunnies by running searches from the itrc search window.

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - June 2003

Dan,
I can't access the search or maintenance & support areas of ITRC. When I click on those items, it just goes to a completely blank screen. I still have to delete the cm cookies whenever I want to just access these forums.

I recently upgraded to Internet Exploder 6.1, so I don't think its on my end. Should I open a support call?

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - June 2003

Hi Chris, et al...regarding search, yes please open a support call or contact ITRC support at itrc.support@hp.com. The search engine is leveraged across the ITRC for all services. I've notified them as well, but good to hear it from you too.

One note, in a couple of days the top header bar will have a search window for a keyword search. It will automatically default to the ITRC Forums!

Thanks,
Dan

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - June 2003

Hi,
there are multiple instance of the same thread:

http://forums.itrc.hp.com/cm/QuestionAnswer/1,,0x6b558b82cc91d711abdc0090277a778c,00.html

My question is: isn't is possible to forbid the posting of a thread, for at least 3 minutes, if titles are exaclty the same ?

This way we could avoid may duplicates..

Volkmar -
I corrected the spelling but am not sure if you need anything deleted when you say:
"Please change the last Merjin to Merijn
.. and delete this one please "

Please let us know if you do.

Massimo,
I have removed the duplicate posts.

Thank you for finding these and reporting them.

And I suffer from slowdown in the afternoon (GMT...)

I do believe your teem is doing its best and thank them for what we already have...

Hi Cheryl,

thanks a lot...

No, with deleting I meant my reply here in this thread.
Sometimes it's really useful to have a spellchecker - but as long as we have you ... ;-))

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - June 2003

It looks like this thread is over-size ....

http://forums.itrc.hp.com/cm/QuestionAnswer/1,,0x644f8b82cc91d711abdc0090277a778c,00.html

Or, at least, for a IE6.1 user !

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - June 2003

Much stranger. The size is caused by the (unbreakable) link posted by T G, and is a known issue.

Stranger however is that holly had a bounce and somehow is mixing up the dup ID (BR754188 and CA979173). I cannot imagine that she is using that to assign points to herself, since 0 out of 19 is not an outstanding assign rate :/

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - June 2003

One thing that really bugs me about the forum is the formatting of free-flowing text when one or more really long lines are added to a reply. Whenever someone puts in a really long url it stretches the width of the window. Simple text suddenly flows all the way out to the ends of those very wide, horizontally scrolled, areas.
Such topics would be much more readable if simple text continued to fold at a reasonable width.

Dan,

Points still need to be submitted more than once for them to take.

I got this when I clicked on the "forums" link after signing in to ITRC:

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - June 2003

Hi Dan and company!

Believe it or not, I have a couple compliments instead of a complaint.

1. The new format looks much better.
2. Speed is better (could be new format, or other changes in the back ground)

Now if you moved from Windows to HP-UX, you may be able to keep this up ;) Come on, impress me more... tell me it's a superdome now ;)

Sincerely,
Shannon

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - June 2003

As I was affraid of: the search box will direct you to a US site. I had to logon again after clicking the european link and had to change my password (dangerous when in moving targets as we are now)

Enjoy, have FUN! H.Merijn (not having fun, feeling very uncomfortable in fearing not being able to use the forum tomorrow)

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - June 2003

I like the new format but miss the "return to thread" link that you had on the acknowledgement screen after submitting points.

Any chance we can get those links back?

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - June 2003

Dan,
I'd still like to get a screen when I click on . Right now, it still gives me a blank page. That means I have to log out (which also gives me a blank page), and then clear out my IE6's Internet Cache. I can then log back in, and go immediately to search. But when that is done, I again get a blank page.

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - June 2003

Hi Chris,

If you click the search "more options" link in the header, you should get the page at http://us-support2.external.hp.com/emse/bin/doc.pl/forward/screen=emseHome?from=forums/

Is this not the case?

Sean, when you submit points or messages, the acknowledgement page has breadcrumb links at the top, and one of them is to return to the message thread.

Thanks,
Dan
