Re: Please Submit Your ITRC Forums Issues for February 2003!

Hi Dan,

The search engine is acting up a bit. I know you get some complaints about it but I have a specific example with URLs if that helps any.

I searched for the term 'xvfb' and I checked the Technical documents, Patches [11.11], and the ITRC forums boxes. It brought up 60 results with the first page of 20 results. Here is the URL that my browser showed:

http://us-support2.external.hp.com/emse/bin/doc.pl/sid=b0833785100daf401d?todo=search&searchcategory=ALL&rn=25&presort
=rank&searchtext=xvfb&searchcriteria=allwords&searchtype=SEARCH_TECH_DOCS&searchtype
=SEARCH_PATCH&searchcategory=HPUX_1111&searchtype=SEARCH_FORUMS&x=46&y=3

When I try to click on any of the links for the search results from the ITRC forum I get 404 errors. Here is the URL from the first search result [an ITRC forum thread]:

http://search.hp.com/redirect.html?url=http%3A//forums.itrc.hp.com/cm/QuestionAnswer/1,,0xf3bf7680e012d71190050090279cd0f9,00.html&qt=xvfb&hit=1

There is one result from the Patches on the first page and that link will work. I went to the second page by clicking on the '2' at the bottom of the page and I was able to pull up a result from the Forum. I clicked on the '1' at the bottom of the page to go back to the first search result page, and I tried the very first result again. This time it worked. Here is that URL:

http://forums.itrc.hp.com/cm/QuestionAnswer/1,,0xf3bf7680e012d71190050090279cd0f9,00.html

It looks like I'm getting different URLs from the search results for the Forum hits, but when I go back and forth between pages it clears up.

I hope this helps. Thanks!

And as you can see at the bottom of https://www.beepz.com/personal/merijn/ and http://www.cmve.net/~merijn/ (don't forget Steven's mirror) it's open for links and/or contributions.

Dan,
For the last week or so, I have mentioned about the non-working search engine issue and you have suggested that I emailed the problemt to the itrc support. However, this problem didn't seem to get fix, until now I am still unable to use the search engine. Could you please look into this issue? In addition, doesn any1 in here having the same problem? if so, how did you resolve it? I have tried to clear out the history and try to replicate/refresh...and it still doesn't work.

Re: Please Submit Your ITRC Forums Issues for February 2003!

I just used the search engine and it worked for me. I had to submit the query twice though. The first time no results were returned. When I resubmited then results were returned as expected.

Dan,

I hate to say it, but the time sync issue has raised its ugly head once again. In this thread, I posted several minutes after Shiju, yet my answer is stamped four minutes before his.

XMAN,

If you reach a state where on a particular pc you can not log in(get the message you are getting).

Delete all your cookies or your hp cookies.

Then you will be able to log in.

I had this issue and went through a support call on it. The key for me was walking down the hall and being able to log in on someone elses pc,while still getting the error on my office pc.

Re: Please Submit Your ITRC Forums Issues for February 2003!

Dan,
Once again I had the problem I described earlier: hitting the button took me to a completely empty page. This time I (1) cleared cache in my Internet Exploder--didn't fix it. (2) Changed the security settings on IE 5--didn't fix it. When I came back to the Forums login page, I again saw "Welcome Chris Vail". (3) So I took the option to log out of the forums. This time, when I came back in, the button worked again: its how I'm writing this message.

The empty page was exactly that: no buttons, toolbars, no scroll knob over on the right: nothing, except a blank page.

So what gives?

Hi Dan,

As a "newbie" here, I would like to see more functionality, such as a "who's on-line" and possibly an IM function.

Just must rusty 2 cents,

Re: Please Submit Your ITRC Forums Issues for February 2003!

Hey Steve,

I did cleaned the cookies and it is better now but it seems that this should be done everynow and then. It just takes longer when I click on the submit button and when I look at the time of my reply, it is the same time of another reply or just few seconds different. I guess that's because of the heavy traffic signals that travles at the same time.

Just a guess.

Thanks.

Re: Please Submit Your ITRC Forums Issues for February 2003!

John, I'll look into what we can do about a place for posting scripts...or a category to post and discuss. Also, thanks for the info on the search ... I forwarded that to the search team.

Chris Vail, I've had a similar problem on other websites (blank pages). I found it was due to my proxy server being used. Are you using a proxy server? I recall either not using one or changing the one I was using to fix the problem.

Ross, thanks for the two ideas...I can't commit to implementing, but will forward to the lab.

Steven, thanks for helping out XMAN.

Re: Please Submit Your ITRC Forums Issues for February 2003!

Thread suggestion:

HP Certification Test preparation.

It would seem that test preparers, flooding the forums with various questions is creating acrimoony in the happy itrc family.

I found it very, very slightly irritating when I found out the questions I was answering were test prep, not real world problems. I should have figured it out sooner.

Having a different thread will let people opt out from being annoyed by this stuff.

I think it would enhance the value of the forums and think there should be one for Linux as well.

Re: Please Submit Your ITRC Forums Issues for February 2003!

Hi Dan,

Two things:

One, it's March - time for new issues and successes threads.

Two, most every morning, somewhere between 1000 and 1130 EST, the response time on the Forums goes to hell. I know we've talked about it before, and I wish I could say it was EVERY morning, but all I can tell you is that today, at approximately 1135, I started experiencing l..o..n...g reload times:

213 seconds to reload the home
page.
146 seconds to open this thread.
89 seconds to open the reply window.
And heaven only knows how long it will take to submit.

Hi Dan:

Response time is in minutes circa 1100 EST. It must be time to: (1) feed the mice; (2) boot those "NT things"; (3) for me to fill out another ITRC survey with what's right and what's wrong! :-))

Re: Please Submit Your ITRC Forums Issues for February 2003!

Good morning Dan,

Guess what?!?!?!?!?!? The timing issue is BACK AGAIN!!!

Check out this thread:
http://forums.itrc.hp.com/cm/QuestionAnswer/1,,0xdf539c196a4bd71190080090279cd0f9,00.html

John Poff's response occurred before the thread was posted and others are out of order. I believe Pete actually responded first, but he is 4 down in the list now.

Re: Please Submit Your ITRC Forums Issues for February 2003!

Dan,

I see the ntp issue also.

http://forums.itrc.hp.com/cm/QuestionAnswer/1,,0x75549c196a4bd71190080090279cd0f9,00.html

My longer post came in just after Pete's, then my 2 shorter responses (including the one about the ntp problem came about 30 minutes later. Roughly.)

If it helps, it is 12:14 pm Mountain time where I am right now.

Re: Please Submit Your ITRC Forums Issues for February 2003!

Saw a post where you claimed to have fixed the Awarding Points problem. Doesn't appear to have worked. I have awarded points at least three times from two different computers and it still hasn't worked even tho I got the thank you note each time.

This is the post:

Re: Please Submit Your ITRC Forums Issues for February 2003!

Hi Ron,

If you are having trouble assigning points, try clearing your temporary Internet files and cookies from your machine. Please note that if you delete the cookies on your machine, you will need to make a note of the User IDs and passwords to sites you visit often, including these forums. There is a specific cookie related to forums called 'cm'....if you can find it, that may be all you need to delete. We've found that this allows assigning points on the first try, and users have reported this being the case.

Thanks,
Dan

Re: Please Submit Your ITRC Forums Issues for February 2003!

Dan: the forum is running very slow this morning, 60-2000 seconds to load posts or change screens when links are clicked. I thought I'd see bunches of posts about it... maybe somebody set the 'slow' flag on my profile (we know you have hidden options like that...8^)

On an unrelated note, shouldn't you start a new thread for "March 2003 issues"?
