Re: POINTS - PART 8,765,129-b

Just as I suspected, the true personality shines through.

Do you feel better now?
That's some professional demeanor you just exhibited there.

You show me just where in that post I called you anything. I'll show you several in your last post.

I've seen your posts where you insult, belittle & berate people. Why do you feel you have to do that? You can't say that about ANY of mine. I dare you to find just ONE.

You don't have a clue about whether I read the entire thread or not. And frankly I don't owe you an answer as to whether I did or not.

But you're sure ready & willing to pass judgement on something you absolutely could not know. Why do you personalize anything you read that you don't like? Go back to my post of last night. There is & was nothing directed toward you personnally. Can you say the same thing? Why is it that you get so upset when people don't agree with you?

Reread your own original post:
\Quote
Once again...we need...
\EndQuote
Who in the hell elected you to speak for us?!
Speak for yourself all you want, but don't you dare presume that you have the right to speak for me!
And listen to to that tone - "Once again"
That sounds like someone who is upset when they don't get their way & they'll keep nagging until they do.

\Quote
I noted to this member that this is not right, the user already paid dues and the question is closed
\EndQuote
When did Dan & Jeff give you the authority to tell forummers what they can do & when they can do it?! Did that poster tell YOU that it was closed?

\Quote
and invite others to join in
\EndQuote
SO am I uninvited now?

As far as I'm concerned, I'll post what & when I damn well please. And my business is simply NONE of yours. And don't even try to tell me what to do - you're simply not man enough.

So why don't you take that attitude of yours where it could be truly appreciated - UseNet.

Re: POINTS - PART 8,765,129-b

I have changed my mind - I do NOT like the closed thread idea....answers can change, what if a patch is recommended - then 2 days later - a patch warning is issued? etc..etc....

If the thread was closed, and another person searched the forums, found that solution - because it was closed - they assumed it was right - and wham - toasts their system.

As far as the ahem, discussion between you and Jeff goes, Shannon , the first line of this thread is:

"I bring this up to continue a debate, and invite others to join in. "

That's pretty open...

Everyone is entitled to their opinion (yourself included) - but no need to "flame" anyone over this....

Re: POINTS - PART 8,765,129-b

OK....Everyone step back and take a deep breath.....

Now...Shannon - Jeff has a valid point (no pun intended). You thread is titled "Points...." so that sounds as if it is a thread about points, not about a suggestion for closing a thread and comment about Forums Etiquette.

I happen to agree with Jeff that the posts about points and people assigning / not assigning are getting rather old. As the forums are now, it does not matter what we do or say, people will or won't assign points.

If you read Jeff's last post, he does make some valid points, though I don't neccessarily agree with how he stated them.

I'm not endorsing the tone of the message, but if you look past that and just look at the points that he makes then I believe they are valid.

Re: POINTS - PART 8,765,129-b

Jeff,

/quot
YOU titled your thread - not me.

I guess I could speculate on why you so obviously mistitled
/endquot

You speculate on whether or not I mis-titled a thread, not I. It happens to be titled correctly. It is another issue on points, and we all know there are countless posts on people not assigning, etc... My post is for a slightly different reason, but still refers back to points.

/quot
I'm simply tired of these whine posts - period.
I don't care if it's about points, resolutions or etiquette. It doesn't matter to me because these type posts add very little value to the forum - if any.
/endquot

Your going to tell me that calling a post a whine is not insulting and deragatory?

Your going to say I have no right to bring up issues that I think are valid because the title is something "you" are tired of seeing?

/quot
You show me just where in that post I called you anything. I'll show you several in your last post.
/endquot

I did not say that you were calling anyone names. I did say that you were being deragatory and inflamatory.

See your comments calling the post a whine, and like all other threads of similar nature, that in your opinion add nothing of value to the forums? Calling someones thoughts a "whine" and of "little value - if any" is not insulting and deragatory?

/quot
But you're sure ready & willing to pass judgement on something you absolutely could not know...
/endquot

Cudos, you did the same thing to me.

/quot
Who in the hell elected you to speak for us?!
Speak for yourself all you want, but don't you dare presume that you have the right to speak for me!
/endquot

Speak for us? or speak for you? Yes, it could be implied, and perhaps my english is not all that it "could" be, but speaking for you or us would mean I used your name, or we in context.

I.E. "Jeff and I think we should have this." or "The forum members think we need this."

I assume, and perhaps incorrectly(but I do not think so), that saying "we need" in a public forum implies "In my opinion, we need".

/quot
As far as I'm concerned, I'll post what & when I damn well please. And my business is simply NONE of yours. And don't even try to tell me what to do - you're simply not man enough.
/endquot

And you have the audacity to tell me that my opions are of little to no value? I dont have the same right to post what I want and when? That I'm whining because your tired of seeing something?

/quot
I'm simply tired of these whine posts - period.
I don't care if it's about points, resolutions or etiquette. It doesn't matter to me because these type posts add very little value to the forum - if any.
/endquot

Noone was assuming anything initially but you Jeff. I pointed that you did not read past the title out to you, and definately NOT in an inflamatory way.

You then proceed to say that my thoughts and opinions add little to no value. Yes, I take that personally, as there is no other way to take it.

/quot
So why don't you take that attitude of yours where it could be truly appreciated - UseNet.
/endquot

You have done a great job in showing the same or worse attidude than I have. Are you following your own advice or am I the only one who has to leave?

Being hypocrital is not that abnormal. We can all be that way at times. Having it pointed out to you should be less deragatory than what you have done to me.

So thanks for hijacking my thread, and turning it into your personal tyrade against posts about points. Then turning it into a pissing match against me.

I really dont care about the latter, but the former I do. It was my thoughts and words, not yours that you covered with graphiti. (In the hypothetical sense of course.)

Sincerely,
Shannon

Re: POINTS - PART 8,765,129-b

Shannon,

I'd be careful about requesting new features, as I'm sure SCO will claim that you are infringing upon one of their Phantom Patents, and SCO would probably include me as an infringer just for pointing it out to you :-))))

I love idea of the Author of a thread to be able to "CLOSE IT", and I like someone else's idea to allow the Author to "REOPEN" it if they see it necessary. I have "dregged" up old posts (but note not ancient ones), especially the DNS Caching post. I will soon "RE-open" it and post a generic install script that will work with HP-UX and Solaris! So I'm in favor if both options are added.

On you second "thought" of "2&3. UPDATE FORUMS EDUQUETTE". You are correct that the Ediquette paper does not supercede HP's, but HP does have a link to it. And I agree with you that it doesn't add anything to answer that the Author's of a question is seeking. On the otherhand I agree that it would be AWESOME if people would take the time to tell us what they used - or a variation of such, so we can tuck it away in our tool belt. Of course that depends upon relying upon other people, which just isn't practical.

Bah, I cant give you 0 Harry, you use SCO ! haha

I agree with the idea that people "should" say what fixed or helped to fix issues. Unfortunately like you and I know it's like assigning points, and wont happen any time soon.

Solution

Re: POINTS - PART 8,765,129-b

OK, time to move on.

I propose a simpler solution. The forums should simply pre-assign zero points to all responses by default.

No more complaints about not assigning points. No more obsessive adherence to 100% assignment ratios. No worries about whether the thread is closed or not. The author can, of course, override the default to reward legitimately helpful answers.

Think about it.
