How can I load postscript fonts on HP-UX ?

Hi,

This is what I have found for you:

Solution

The only way to use PostScript fonts is to make them available via the
font server. Our Xserver does not directly handle PostScript fonts, but
the font server does.

Use these steps:

1. Place your *pfa. (actual postscript font files) in this directory:

/usr/lib/X11/fonts/type1.st/typefaces

2. Place your *tfm. (font metric files) in this directory:

/usr/lib/X11/fonts/type1.st/metrics

3. Add the fonts.dir entries that came with the font files to the
fonts.dir and fonts.scale files in this directory:

/usr/lib/X11/fonts/type1.st/typefaces

4. Kill the font server process.

5. Restart the font server process.

6. Use the xlsfonts commnand referencing the font server.

Note: You should see the new font listed.

7. View the font with the xfd command.

Note: You may receive this error:

Warning: Cannot convert string
"-adobe-helvetica-light-o-condensed-helvetica condensed
lightobl 41082-0-0-0-0-p-0-iso8859-1" to type FontStruct
xfd: no font to display

If you receive this error, you are encountering licensing
restrictions on the *st. directories that are supposed to be
controlled by configuration files under
/usr/lib/X11/fonts/type1.st/licenses/

Solve the problem with these steps:

a. Move the new Adobe fonts to a completely different
directory (in this case /opt/type1/).

b. Run /usr/sbin/stmkdirs in that directory to create the
fonts.dir file.

c. Stop the font server.

d. Start the font server.

The fonts should now appear in xfd and other applications.


Additional Note
---------------

If you want to locate added fonts in the licensed directories, add
them to the fonts.dir file to make them available to X displays that
are referencing the font server.

Copy the fonts.dir file that was created with stmkdirs and is located
in this directory:

/usr/lib/X11/fonts/type1.st/typefaces

to this directory:

/usr/lib/X11/fonts/type1.st/licenses/STSYSTEM/DISPLAYS/

We like the Ghostscript for this....as Bill said you can download this (free) and set it up.
It's very handy for postscript as well as converting other types.
