problem in connecting with hyper terminal;

Hi,
I have rp4440 and i tried to connect it with the console cable to a laptop and open with hyperterminal .but it is not connecting . I have changed the settings to autodetect,vt100 etc. I have changed the console cable and laptop and tried.still the problem exists. There is no VGA port in my server.Can anyone tell me the possible reason and way to rectify it.

Re: problem in connecting with hyper terminal;

Are you using a null modem cable?

Is the comm port you are using enabled on the laptop?

Are you using 9600 as your connect speed?

Are you connecting to the correct console port on the rp4440?

no i use console cable where one end connecting to server is lan port and port connecting to laptop is serial.
Is the comm port you are using enabled on the laptop?
how to do it

Are you using 9600 as your connect speed?
yes
Are you connecting to the correct console port on the rp4440?
ya i have connected in the port "MC LOCAL"
and there are two more ports called "AUXILLARY" & "REMOTE"

Re: problem in connecting with hyper terminal;

You are in a catch 22, if I understand correctly.

You are trying to connect to the LAN port on the management card, but it probably is not configured yet

you need to connect to the serial port on the management card to the serial port on the laptop (using a null modem cable or a HP serial console cable). You should then be able to connect to the system console and configure/activate the LAN port

Re: problem in connecting with hyper terminal;

Hi Renga,
Please check whether you have got 9 pin connector or 25 pin connector for console. if it is 25 pin use the HP provided W or M cable(which will have three ports comming out 1-remote, 2-console, 3-UPS) and connect the null modem cable to cosole port.
Terminal Emulation settings is default 9600speed only

Re: problem in connecting with hyper terminal;

You cannot use a standard serial cable. You are connecting two computers together so you must use a special cable. A standard cable is called straight-through or modem cable (which will not work). You must use a crossover cable, also known as a null-modem cable or serial printer cable. Without the right cable, you are sending data into the transmit wire of the computer rather than the receive wire.

You can also purchase a null-modem adapter at your local PC store which will swap the wires for you.

Re: problem in connecting with hyper terminal;

Hi,
I have a black cable with 25 pin connector at one end and three serial (remote,console ,ups) ports at other end .
But I cannot use since the server has no parallel port to connect it with .Also the server has three serial port named M/C LOCAL,AUXILLARY,REMOTE AND THWO USB AND TWO LAN PORTS .
There is a serial to lan connector attached in M/C LOCAL port which is by default.so I tried to connect the lan cable to serial of Laptop(console cable-blue one),but it is not working.I think it is the default which we use to connect with hyper terminal .

tell me the othere possible problems.

> I have a black cable with 25 pin connector at one end and three serial (remote,console ,ups) ports at other end .

This is called the W cable because of it's shape. The 25 pin connector at one end is a proprietary connection to provide 3 separate 9pin serial ports as you've seen. You connect your PC or laptop to the CONSOLE port using a 9pin to 9pin crossover cable.

> But I cannot use since the server has no parallel port to connect it with .

There is no such thing as a parallel port for console communication. You may be confusing the 25pin port with 25pin parallel ports (called Centronics ports) but as I said, the 25pin connector is not a standard serial connection, but actually contains 3 separate serial ports which appear as 9pin ports at the end of the cable.

So get a 9pin to 9pin crossover (null modem or printer) cable and connect your PC to the CONSOLE port. The LAN connector is only for LAN connections -- I know that there are LAN connectors (called RJ-45) that convert to a 9pin serial connection but these have nothing to do with converting a LAN to serial. Those adapters are a cheap alternative to using the more expensive 9pin connectors and can provide higher density (more connectors) on some data concentrators.

Hyperterminal will work fine once you use the correct cable. If your 9pin to 9pin cable is unmarked (does not say modem or straight through or printer or crossover, etc) then you have a 50% chance of getting it wrong.

Re: problem in connecting with hyper terminal;

Hi Renga,
I think there is issue with cable your using.
1. your can try use 9 pin female to 9 female cable to connect to the labtop .
2. set the IP address of labtop to 192.168.1.2 and try telnet to 192.168.1.1 by connecting cross cable to the MP lan console.

Thanks and regards

Re: problem in connecting with hyper terminal;

I have the 9 pin female to female connector and checked but when I checked the cable with multimeter, it is a straight one anyway I will check with telnet

Re: problem in connecting with hyper terminal;

The straight-thru cable won't work. Pins 2 and 3 are transmit and receive so the other end of the cable must be reversed so 2-->3 and 3-->2 Just to be sure, follow the wiring on this page for a 9pin null modem cable:
