remote console login

What are the commonly used tools or software for remote console login to hpux servers ?

I appreciate if someone details the procedure for remote login.

Hi,

Not sure if I understand you correct. Do you mean a "ordinary" remote login or the remote mangement processor (GSP) ?

By default, the common tools rlogin and telnet is enabled in HP-UX and can be used without any additional configurations.

Another, very common tool is ssh, ssh is not installed by default, it nust be installed and configured separate.

Well I did use webconsole but HP anounced its death...
Here we have created a special subnet for lan consoles....
And we also use terminal servers such as cisco 2500 or lantronix gear

Hi Shiv ,

Remote console login , you mean to convey controlling remotely as we are seating like in console, then GSP is the answer.

If you logged in to the GSP IP , you will connected to the console. And even you can shutdown the system and restrat and watch the activity.

And other way the remote login tools are ,
telnet
putty [ 3rd party s/w , can use ssh,telnet]
ssh
rlogin

Hi Shiv ,

Through GSP , you will get normal login prompt after you , telnet to the GSP IP.

Here is a sample output:

And Now its your choice , if you like to login as root or ordinary user.

And for loggin in as a root can be done from anywhere with any of the above mentioned tool , like telnet , ssh , putty , rlogin . And all depends on system permission.

1.You can login to ordinary user with $ prompt and do a su to get root.
2. If sudo installed , you can do
$ sudo su -
And you will get #.

In that case you have 2 choices
1) a "console" lan (subnet) with dedicated switches...
2) More hardware such as cisco 2511 or annex XL (terminal servers - Very similar in look as switches but usually have true or RJ45 type serial connexions

For remote login you have to make your local network available to the same network , the server is , may be through SOCKS cleient with confuguration file or Aventail connect , using citrix or other tools. And then you can use telnet , ssh , or putty or other tools , to get login.

Hi,

MP/GSP card is one option you must be looking for. You can attach a modem to dial in and get console login. Within same network it also gives you a direct login by assigning a IP address to its port.

For dialing in using a modem you should have the remote enabled in GSP.Here is the documentation. It is for Superdome but for others also it will not be much different.

Hi Shiv,

Terminal servers are a good way of getting a remote console as you have the complete control of the system quite essential nowadays as systems are located remotely as companies are looking for cheaper options. This would allow you to see the system console even in conditions like system crash.

Im HP-UX you also have the option of GSP which is a real good thing and many words have already been written in this post, so I would not take it much.

Apart from this for remote login, there are several tools like

Reflection
Reflection X (for X windows inteface)
putty
Compaq Pathworks 32 (By Ericom Software) ..etc
Native telnet in windows

there are 3 common methods available.

1.Serial Console ( used to connect your console terminal)
2.LAN console ( IP based IP configured with the LC command)
3.Secure web console. (external device for secure we console login)

Serial console cable is normally are not used for remote access, but the second and 3rd options are used for remote logins.

There is one more method of accessing console via dialup from remote locations. This method is successfully being used by support engineers to manage systems which are very far away. HP follows the same method too for their remote support.

There are lots of choices as mentioned. But remember that a remote login to the console is the most serious security risk there is. For modern HP servers, such a login can reboot, halt or crash the server, even turn off the power to a server. So the very first consideration is SECURITY. That eliminates the remote support modem as it does not have adequate security. Same with the Web Console (notice the lack of the word "Secure"). It is only useful within a firewwall-protected network. If your remote computer is behind a firewall, talk with your network and security administrators about a VPN conection for the Web Console.

However, if your remote computer is also part of a larger computer room, there may be several other serial console requirements such as routers, firewalls, spam filters, etc. In this case, a secure terminal concentrator makes a lot of sense. These boxes handle 2 to 48 serial ports using telnet or ssh as the access method. Some of the concentrators will 'remember' text sent to the console even when you are not connected. Check out products from Cyclades, Raritan, Cisco. Note: there are two types of console servers: serial and KVM (short for Keyboard, Video, Mouse). KVM boxes are only for PCs and most Linux servers. Serial console servers connect to RS-232 serial console ports.

my previous job I used DigiConsole is very effective and secure, you can use ssh to encrypt your connection. it allows you multiple connections to the console, either from the command or website.

solution and some of them are default accoding to your system but the main point is

Hi Shiv

Most of hp-ux servers have Remote Port for Remote Console Login. This port needs to be enabled in hp-ux by "dialin enable" whereby relevant device files will be created.

You may then connect a modem and dial from remote site to login as console.

Please ensure you secure this port after use in order to prevent unauthorised use. This can be done at GSP level
