If you can afford it, you can also setup an Ignite server....then run:

/opt/ignite/bin/make_net_recovery -s ignsvr1 -x inc_entire=vg00

As an aside, make_recovery is being deprecated - use make_tape_recovery as Pete mentioned.

For tape:

/opt/ignite/bin/make_tape_recovery -x inc_entire=vg00

I ran this command:

# ioscan -fknCtape

The output is attached. Yes it seems as though the tape is /dev/rmt/0m

I have to go ask for a tape and then I'll proceed...

Ok I will put in a blank tape and run:

# /opt/ignite/bin/make_tape_recovery -x
inc_entire = vg00

Will this also backup my data or just the root volume?

Just the root volume group,
But it will be bootable and you can use it to reconfigure vg00...

This is what is called a true recovery tape, so my advice would be once created, protect it against write and try to boot from it, if its a good one then it will be your most precious good to keep...

Thanks. I just got a tape from my supervisor and the capacity is 4GB (this should be enough right?).

I will now go and do the backup. He (my supervisor) already did a backup of the data files so I'll go ahead with my exercise now...

Next step:
I dont know how you system is configured, here I configure tape as alternate path so for me its dead easy: boot alt...
You may have to do at ISL
(You remember the stop system boot to be in single user...)
you will have to enter the command sea
to see bootable devices and look for the P that is sequential access which should be your tape
and then type bo P

Boot:
Displays:
ISL Revision
ISL Booting hpux ;0):INSTALL
Boot
: tape (its path...): INSTALL

You will fall on a welcome like
@ Welcome to Ignite Ux
...
press enter to stop batch install (or something equivalent)
a menu driven display should appear like:

[ Install HPUX ]
[ Run a recovery shell ]
I dont remember the rest but you should see somewhere
Reboot
So choose reboot to come out of it

Waiting to see your recovery tape business become another success...
Because I would like to see if you installed the support tools like online diags.
This can be seen you type cstm or xstm & if in XWindows...
From this application we can see how you are installed, firmware revs etc...

Dont know where you are, I expected it to say:
"HARD BOOTED" and see it continue with it displaying ISL Revision and ISL booting...
type boot and see what happens
You sould have seen something like:

I just reboot and back out...
