root access lost

We have a system whereby the root password has been disabled, unfortunately we do not have a system console at the location to bring it down to single user and change it. Is there anything we can do? I realise I'm basically asking how to hack the machine but is there anything we could do. Is it possible to emulate the console via a PC and cable?

a certain individual set it so that after three failed root logins the system became disabled....you could still login via the console if we had one!

Re: root access lost

Don't know what type of system you are having D class or the N/L class.

depending on the serial port behind the server, you can have a serial cable, connect it to the PC's serial port. Have done this for a D class server using a 9 pin serial cable. Run hyperterm from the windows PC. set the baud rate to 9600, no parity data bit of 8 and 1 stop bit.

You will get everything coming on console to this PC.

yes, the same thing for any L class or N class, provided you have the correct cables. Hope you are having it as you are already connected to a console.

Re: root access lost

You could try installing X emulation software (Exceed) on one of the PC in the network and it should work.
You can have CONSOLE emulation on your PC using X emulation sofware.

You need to know a lot to actually know how little you know
