Re: Slow Network Response

hi,
There may be many reasons for slow network.
some are listed here.
1) Network card related patches
2) Speed & duplex settings mismatch on the
card & switch.
3) Network cable problems.
4) Switch Mismatch - Vlan problem.
5) DNS,NIS Configuration problems.

Re: Slow Network Response

Hi,

Are you running DNS? If so, does making a connection by address versus name differ in speed?
If it's faster when using an address you may be suffering from reverse-name-lookup delays.
Make sure that your DNS tables contain the names of all devices.

FOR NIS Check:

/etc/resolv.conf /etc/nsswitch.conf

Do you have something like NIS in nsswitch.conf while you are not using it.

Yes i was working for (Respected)HCL.

Re: Slow Network Response

Hi Suraj,
This problem can occur out of many
reason's

->Netowrk Load/Traffic on server
->Problem related to negotiation between
the switch/hub and your server.

and if you are talking about the response
time i.e. say you give command
telnet your_server_name
and it takes time to establish a
connection then its a problem related to
your DNS.

can you please explain your question.

Thanks,
Amit

Re: Slow Network Response

hai,

Check the I/O devices capability with ioscan call. Lanscan to check lan performance.

nslookup command to check hostname resolvation. It will give the detailful flow of hostname resolvation path. Is it from dns or files or ldap (if use ) or nisplus etc.

If you face the slow network response, there may be some entries in the syslog. It may be because of network traffic or lan interface problem or h/w problem.

We can check network response with sar,top commands.

Muthukumar.
Easy to suggest when don't know about the problem!

Re: Slow Network Response

Hi,

Mostly this happens due to the mismathc of the network card speed and lan speed.
Try using the CAT5 network patch cable also

Re: Slow Network Response

Suraj,
In addition to all the reasons provided by our friend here like n/w card config, DNS, NIS, etc. I would suggest that you look at using a tool to monitor the network statistics on your host.

netstat
