System won't boot

Hello:

I have become the proud caretaker of a 9000
J200. It has been years since I used HP-UX.

The system, is I believe, running 10.X.
The system hangs on boot, I get the 8 yellow
boxes across the bottom:
blank blank blank REMOTEMODE blank blank DISPLAYFUNCTIONS AUTOLF
The cursor is in the upper-right corner, but nada from then on. I have tried various key combos (Ctrl-b, etc.) but no response. I can press one of the 3 function keys and the corresponding yellow box gets the *, so there is some communication.

Any ideas how to get the system to the autoboot stage?

Thanks in advance.

Hi Brown,

First you should see that you get a "*" on REMODE MODE Box to get the messages from the CPU Box. Some boxes will not boot if they don't find any Console.

Post details of error messages you get on screen.

All the best.

Re: System won't boot

Does this machine have a graphics card? maybe the console is configured to be the graphical console (which would be normal).

If your doing this on the graphical console, then it's possible, someone moved the console to be a serial port. Try plugging a terminal into that.

Re: System won't boot

All those graphic boxes set automatically console to what is attached. The algorithm is pretty complex, BUT to get console on ASCII, be sure to have no graphic screen, no keyboard, no mouse attached to the CPU. Just plug an HP terminal to the serial port #1. The terminal must have remote mode on (the little star), and be the usual 9600 bauds, 8 bits, no parity. Be sure to have the terminal up and ready before turning the system on, to be sure to miss no message.

Now it it does not help you may also attach a graphical display, a keyboard, and a mouse (with NO ascii terminal attached) just in case...

Hope it helps, Emmanuel

Re: System won't boot

Other than that, keep pressing escape on boot to try to get bch prompt.

At BCH, BO PRI
interactl with IPL at ISL prompt hpux -is
to bring the system up.

You might also want to try to hold and press TAB on boot to get an initial menu to select the monitor refresh rate.

Re: System won't boot

hi,
* should be there in 'remote mode' square box.
and also pree any key (when system prompts to press any key) from the prompt 'search' to find the boot path and boot from the bootpath.

Re: System won't boot

Actually a long story, I had just reponded to a question in the Workstations group posted by an instructor I used to work with around 2 years ago.
I clicked on his name url and saw how long he was a member of the itrc for.. seeing as he just posted a question in his 'recent responses' list that sounded really interesting "System won't boot" I decided to follow it up!!
And you guessed it he hadn't been active on the itrc for quite some time!

Re: System won't boot

Hey Bill,

This reminds me of a comic drawing I saw a
long time ago where a guy walks in to an
office with his hat and coat on. He says
"System been down long" only to find a
a that there is a skeleton sitting at
the desk.

Just goes to show we will do anything to
help a lost soul... in this case perhaps
a skeleton.....lol

Cheers
