what do you get for
ioscan -fnkCtape
have you installed the tape drivers.
insf -e -C tape

hope you alredy did , after connecting
ioscan
insf -eC tape.
more info as to "what type" of tape drives you ntend to discover will be useful , like
standalone ultrium , direct attached scsi dat , over SAN etc .

Please do as follows,
If ur connecting external tape drive n connect it to scsi port make sure drive is off.
check,
ioscan -fnC tape
insf -e
in ioscan -funC tape
u will get tape path check
u switch on the drive.
check #mt -f tape_drive_path_mn status
if tape is there it will show tape size.
If the drive is not detected u need to install stape driver.
Hope by following this ur issues resolves.

is the stape driver compiled within the kernel
You'll need the stape drive for the tape drive
