Thanks for the memory

Hi

What's the minimum amount of memory needed to run...

HP-UX 11.0
HP-UX 11i

I'm told 256Mb & 512Mb respectively

If correct...
Simply - why the diff?

Regards
Mike

Re: Thanks for the memory

For 11.0, 32MB is the minimum and 64MB is recommended. That's the official company line - in my experience you're not going to be doing much useful work with that little RAM.

For 11i: 64MB minimum with the exception that all servers should have 128MB minimum. Again, way too little in my opinion.

As for the difference, 11i has more features and different ways of doing things, thus more memory requirements. It's just a natural evolution.

Check hte release notes at http://docs.hp.com
They usually give minimums etc.

Re: Thanks for the memory

Here we set our minimum memory requirement for all HPUX workstation (11.x) regardless of 64bit or not to 256MB. I've 256MB on my B2000 11i (64bit) for general sysadmin work it's sufficient. There are engineering users who has gotten up to 1GB of memory in order for their graphical software to run well.

Re: Thanks for the memory

You can run HP-UIX in as little as 24 to 32 megs of RAM. HOWEVER, you'll need at least 1000 megs of swap space to to do simple sysadmin tasks, double or triple that in order to run useful programs.

So why do people recommend gigabytes of RAM? Simply put, 32 megs of RAM means that you cannot run SAM or swinstall or perform filesystem maintenance without paging out to the swap area. 500 megs of RAM will allow you to run sysadmin utilities without swapping. But if you have two processes that need 30 megs of RAM, they will run fine in 32megs of RAM. They will be continuously paging in and out until they finish (along with any other processes like vi). IF the processes normally take 10 minutes to run with no swapping, you can figure 20 to 40 hours with just 32megs of RAM.

So if you have enormous amounts of time on your hands, HP-UX will gladly fit lots of programs into very small memory. Otherwise, you need a minimumn of 256 megs for a server and 512 megs for a workstation running CDE/Xwindows. If you run Oracle on you a server, start with 2000megs and look at 4000-8000megs for good performance.

Re: Thanks for the memory

Ive got workstations with 32Mb RAM running 11.0 and 11.11 successfully. With all non essential system processes shutdown or not activated then there is just enough free RAM to run sam, swinstall etc.
Im from Palmerston North, New Zealand, but somehow ended up in London...
