Re: to geek or not to geek .. =)

As geeks (men), we acknowledge our wives don't always understand us and that we sometimes upset them (accidently, of course). So how do we make up? Give them perfume! Here's the perfect choice:

Nice link, Darrel.
Come to think of it, exploiting the guilty consciences of us geeks creates a lucrative niche market.
While we're on the topic, I say geeks can be as romantic as anyone else. Well, maybe not the French Poets, but definitely TV Repairmen, Auto Mechanics or IRS Agents.

Re: to geek or not to geek .. =)

I, too, am a geek.

What's really bad about being a HP-UX and Solaris geek is that I can't explain my job to my in-laws. They're small town farmers and when I even attempt to explain my job their eyes just glaze right over.

I suppose the same thing happens to me when they start talking about the different organic soy beans they plant... :)

Well I suppose you could say that both my husband and I are geeks.
Imagine the conversations in the pub !

Trying to explain our jobs to parents & in-laws is fun too. Their eyes glaze over as soon as you mention "computer" :-)

Re: to geek or not to geek .. =)

Geekdom is all relative. Its something that you don't know you have. If you look straight in the mirror, you look like a real person that looks half-way decent. When one of the "outsiders" looks at you they see a strange individual. But "real" and "strange" and "outsider" have all relative meanings too. So it depends on which tribe your being assessed by. Thats the beauty of being a geek... you can simply move around and slip into and out of Geekdom!

I can't believe I am writing this... I just need the few more points... thats all...just a few... boy, am I really a geek in this tribe.

Re: to geek or not to geek .. =)

I am not geek. I was looks like geek few years back when I wasn't even involve with computers. as some one mention unattractive.
Now I work in UNIX, I had got my master degree but I am more attractive. Always well deress, talkative, involve in many activity, no long hair. Few years back I was even scare to talk to girls, Now I can talk to any girl any time.
I remember that was the defination of geek in school.

So I am not worried either way that someone calls me geek or not.

Re: to geek or not to geek .. =)

Hello Richard,

another way of telling this, is to ask the people around us:
once I was having fun snowboarding in the swiss alps and had just entered the at that time biggest cabin (100 persons) when a customer rang on my mobile phone and I had to explain him, how to configure his kernel. Would have somebody asked the 99 other persons in this cabin (after explaining what a "geek" is, of course) they might have called me one...
