Re: umount a NFS resource that have been disconnect

Chris,

Unfortunately, the current version of NFS has no capability to forcibly unmount a non-responsive NFS mount. The only way to clean this up is to re-boot.

Hi Chris,

I think you only can reboot the ws after deleting the NFS mount point from /etc/fstab.

Re: umount a NFS resource that have been disconnect

There is one possiblity that, try to reexport the NFS resource, so that it will access and umount at that time. And then unexport the directory. It will do it with out problem :-)

But without the above, reboot only needed there. And remove the fstab entries for the particular export informations.

umount problem not responding still trying
is coming on nfsv3.. I hope dave (NFS guru and developer) will give more details on this issue

Easy to suggest when don't know about the problem!

Re: umount a NFS resource that have been disconnect

Hi Chris,

I've written a technical paper that deals with this exact scenario. There may be ways for you to get your client back in order without rebooting it, even without a forcible unmount facility.

The technical paper is titled "Forcibly Unmounting NFS Filesystems" and it is located at:

http://docs.hp.com/hpux/onlinedocs/3929/ForciblyUnmountingNFSFilesystems.pdf

Hopefully some of the tricks in this guide will help you resolve your problem.

In case you haven't heard, HP will be providing the ability to forcibly unmount hung NFS filesystems in the very near future. In October (current plan) we will release HP-UX 11i v2 update 2, which will allow HP-UX 11i v2 to run on both PA-RISC and Itanium processors. One of the new features that we've added to this release is forcible NFS unmounts. Once 11i v2 update 2 is installed, you could do a "unmount -f " and the client will forcibly unmount the filesystem, even if there are pending I/Os on the device.

For now, your best bet is to try the tricks I outline in the technical paper.

Good luck,

Dave

Hi all,

This is the real Chris Johnson.

I do not know why someone is posting questions using my ID, but it is not me.

I apologize to those who have replied to this post, whether it is a valid question or not.

This incident has been reported to HP.

Chris,

Could it be a colleague innocently using your login because they don't have their own?

I used a colleague's login for a short while before getting set up with my own account (with his knowledge I hasten to add).
