`xterm' terminal type is not supported.
Hello,
I am facing a problem in HP Server cx4610 (Hp 11.20) during loging in .
It gives following error.
`xterm' terminal type is not supported.
---------------------------------------
I have increase the kernel parameter nptys and rebuild the kernel.. But still i am getting the same error.
And Also i am not getting the desktop login at the console . I am getting command mode login.
Is there any patches to be installed to resolve this?
Could you please help me regarding this?
Thanks
Shashikiran Bhat

Re: `xterm' terminal type is not supported.
I'm not sure why playing with the kernel will help.
You're not getting x login because.
/sbin/init.d/xfs start
Has not been run.
For auto start modify this file
/etc/rc.config.d/xfs
Change the first variable to 1
By default its set to 0 (bad choice I told HP, offending someone a few years back, soory).
Make that change ande try again, maybe it will work better.

Re: `xterm' terminal type is not supported.
Can it be that de CDE environment is not installed on this system?
That would explain the character-base login at the console of this workstation.
Regards,
Peter

Re: `xterm' terminal type is not supported.
There are a couple of things going on here.
1. rx4610 server does not support an Xserver running on the console in HP-UX. This is a limitation of this hardware and will not be addressed. The i2000 has similar limitations. These machines can run CDE, but clients must be other workstations, Xterminals, or PCs running Xterminal emulation software. Local graphics on the console is available for this platform only running MS Windows or Linux.
2. 'xterm' terminal type error is probably the lack of an xterm terminfo entry. Try changing the value of TERM to vt100 or vt220 to see if the message goes away.
