HP DAT on HP server blocking with Linux

In /var/log/messages, it says:

This is usually a problem with being off the support matrix. If every component is on the matrix than you probably have a driver issue or perhaps its not installed correctly.
Seems that all the hardware is compatible, so you may have a lack of scsi termination or a bad scsi card or cable. Cables are cheap, so I'd try replacing that first.

- the DAT works well when it is attached to an other server with Unixware
- with an other model of DAT, it works well on the Linux server (so the SCSI card and the cable seem good).

I take it you're swapping the external-drive without power-cycling the machine?
How are you getting the machine to re-read the SCSI bus?
