Red Hat ES4 on DL380 G4 with SAS Disks

Hi,
I am having a linux install problem. I have created my logical drive(s) via the Array controller (F8) startup option but Red Hat ES4 install process cannot see any of the logical drives.
Has anyone had the same problem an know a way to get Linux to see the logical drives.

Shalom,

RH won't boot off a RAID 5 array if memoery servers. Create a Raid 1 array in the hardware and RedHat will boot, install and recognize without problems.

I've got a few servers exactly like yours and they work well with RH.

Re: Red Hat ES4 on DL380 G4 with SAS Disks

Hi,

Yeah thought of that have built as 2 x 73GB HD RAID 1 Mirrors in box 1 slot 1 and slot 2. I have created the virtual disk in the array manager but RHEL cannot see the disk. Thinking it might be the array controller (HP P400) so trying to update the firmware as we speak.

Re: Red Hat ES4 on DL380 G4 with SAS Disks

You need a later version of ES4. The cciss driver will support SAS controllers I believe from Update 3 and later. Otherwise you need to use the driver disk provided at http://h18000.www1.hp.com/support/files/server/us/download/27186.html for install.

Re: Red Hat ES4 on DL380 G4 with SAS Disks

I have RHEL 4 as to update version I have no idea, the media has no indication as to update number but it is only a few weeks old.

I have updated the firmware for the P400 array controller to 2.08 and also the iLO and Broadcomm Ethernet from the Firmware CD. When RHEL 4 32bit X86 version starts it still cannot see the logical volume on the SAS disks?

Any ideas?

is for P600 etc controllers, I have tried it but I did not work for the P400 - but thanks for the effort.

Re: Red Hat ES4 on DL380 G4 with SAS Disks

Pete:

You need to download the Smart Array driver from http://h18000.www1.hp.com/support/files/server/us/download/27186.html
and either create a diskette, or USB key. Then boot from the RH CD, and at the prompt type 'linux dd'. Then follow the instructions as the appear on the screen. At the appropriate prompt the system will load and use the new driver for the installation.

Re: Red Hat ES4 on DL380 G4 with SAS Disks

Hi,

Jess I had already tried that so I downloaded a slightly earlier version and tried # linux updates dd and # linux dd. The diskm was read but found nothing to update.

I then manually chose cciss from the list and tried to install RHEL, however same result "no device to install" against.

I have exhausted every thing I can think of... Help anyone... please.

Re: Red Hat ES4 on DL380 G4 with SAS Disks

I managed to get the SAS disk recognised by the Linux installer How: not entirley sure but a complete powerdown including the removal of the power leads for 30 seconds did the trick. Linux could see the logical volume straight away. Wierd!

Re: Red Hat ES4 on DL380 G4 with SAS Disks

Re: Red Hat ES4 on DL380 G4 with SAS Disks

the problem is the same after i use diskette external dc141b, but i verify that problem is RHEL ES VERSION 4, because i have try load wmware esx server and it see array p400 and i have try CENTOS4 and it see array p400. Then i think if i use RHEL ES VERSION 4 UPDATE X ( I DON'T KNOW THE VERSION OF UPDATE )this is a solution at my problem.

who can confirm that i say???

thank you very mutch

Re: Red Hat ES4 on DL380 G4 with SAS Disks

the solution at this problem is this:

you have to download, after register a subscrition in redhat web site, RHEL ES VERSION 4 UPDATE 5. you have to download 5 iso image and then copy this file on cd-r. i have install os without load driver of smart array p400 from usb drive o floppy.

Re: Red Hat ES4 on DL380 G4 with SAS Disks

Would this problem exist on rx6600 Integrity server with SAS drives for RH 3.0 or 4.0? I am about to setup a rx6600 with RH 3.0 and I was wondering if I might run into this trouble or not.

Thanks,
Jorge

Re: Red Hat ES4 on DL380 G4 with SAS Disks

i think you have to use RHEL 4 AS WITH LAST UPDATE 4 or RHEL 5 ( they support smart array controller p400-p600 and i think p800) , BECAUSE I HAVE SEEN LINUX NOT SUPPORTED THIS SERVER WITH RHEL 3. READ THIS LINK
