Then eliminate all files named afer the new kernel.
This links above are good. I don't know why you got the error, if you used Red Hat Network, this should have been very smooth for you.

Re: Want to upgrade kernel from 2.4.20-8 to 2.4.22 (redhat linux 9.0)
Hi,
I tried RHN but it did not help as it had 2.4.20 as latest kernel.
The following URL was useful: http://www.yolinux.com/TUTORIALS/LinuxTutorialOptimization.html#KERNELCOMPILE
Now 2.4.22 is up and running. Thanks for all your help ..

Re: Want to upgrade kernel from 2.4.20-8 to 2.4.22 (redhat linux 9.0)
RH back-port most changes in packages and leave the version number as the distributed number, but change the revision number.
The latest eratta kernels from RH are along the liens of 2.4.20-20 (20 revisions on this series of kernel).
The last few changes listed in the changelog of the kernel:
* Wed Jul 16 2003 Arjan van de Ven
- add proc and execve fixes
- update ide drivers to fix critical bugs
* Sat Jul 12 2003 Rik van Riel
- upgrade to latest -rmap to fix #89226, #90668, etc.
So unless there's something specifically in 2.4.22, that isn't listed in these bug fixes, you'd probably be better off with the RH kernel on a RH system.
Just my opinion however.. ;)
