Upgrading Alphaserver 800 on VMS 7.1-2 to VMS 7.3

I have an Alphaserver 800 running on VMS 7.1-2 and want to upgrade to 7.3/7.31.

The upgrade paths say that we can upgrade from 7.1-2 to 7.3-1.

When I try to boot -flags 0,0 dka400
I get a crashdump and warning HWRPB invalid.
Does anyone know what ECO/ Hardware patch I need to apply?

Has anyone successfully upgraded an Alphaserver 800?
thanks

Despite the fact your in the wrong forum....
I have a AS800 here running VMS 7.3-1, so it should work.
Verify that you have SRM console firmware V5.8-16, if not, first do a firmware upgrade.

Hello,

I am running an AlphaServer 800 as my home server at 7.3-1 and intend to upgrade to 7.3-2 as soon as I can get my hands on the media ;-)
Make sure you are at the latest firmware. You should have received the firmware CD along with the OS. Just boot it and follow the instructions.

Hi,
problem is in firmware; I happened same with older AS400 and after upgrade SRM it0s works fine.
Look at your CD, you have a firmware CD. Upgrade is ver simple to make.

Re: Upgrading Alphaserver 800 on VMS 7.1-2 to VMS 7.3

I did upgrade my firmware.. still can't boot
from 7.2-1 or 7.3-1 cd's.

SRM is at V5.8-16 (july 24 2000)
PAL code is V1.21-3
ARC Console v5.70
Decchip 21164A-2 500Mhz
MB revision 54-24803-02 Rev A
HWRPB is at 2000

Is there a later SRM? I can't seem to find any?
Does it matter what ECO's have been installed
on 7.1-2

thanks

Re: Upgrading Alphaserver 800 on VMS 7.1-2 to VMS 7.3

Hello Harvee,

Palcode and Console version are current. These are the same ones I do have on my AS800 under my desk right now. The next thing to check in case of CD boot problems is the CD-Rom drive. What type is in your box. There are often problems with third party models that work once VMS is up, but cannot be used to boot.

Hello Martin.. thanks for the input and confirmation..
my DKA400 device is RRD47 (1206)

I suppose I should try and replace it with another one?.. have to find a SCSI CDROM now!

Hi Martin,

The cdrom device is a Toshiba CD-rom drive Model XM-6201B.. it's got a sticker RRD47-AB
p/n 591858-CO.. do you know of a later one that works in this server? In case I have to buy another one!

Bingo!
I changed the RRD47-AB drive for an earlier model RRD46 and now I can boot OK from the CDROMS.. so I'll upgrade to VMS7.3-1

A Big Thanks to ALL from sunny OZ

Re: Upgrading Alphaserver 800 on VMS 7.1-2 to VMS 7.3

Now, that rings a bell...

I have an old BA364 box connected to my DEC3000-300. Above the 4 SBB slots there is room for a CD-ROM drive. I do recall that I had to throw out a RRD47 drive, too, because I could not boot from it (it was around late 1996 and the OS was V7.0 or 7.1 if I recall correctly). There is still an RRD46 mounted in the box...
