VMS 7.2-1 & PPP
I can set up PP interfaces with all the correct parameters OK.
I can set up LTA devices via a terminal server
I can use PPPD to dial the target device (a linux platform) to the point of connecting and getting a log-in prompt on the remote system but when I enter the 'convert this line to PPP' command, the line drops and there's no trace of any connection.
We've had this working on oVMS 7.3 and later with exactly the same setup/configuration. Is there something about VMS7.2-1 &/or TCPIP 5.0a thats failing?

Re: VMS 7.2-1 & PPP
Welcome to the OpenVMS itrc forum!
First of all, what patches do you have for this, rather obsolete, system?
I see that there is a PPPD specific patch mentioned: -
VMS721_PPPD-V0300
http://ftp.support.compaq.com.au/pub/ecoinfo/ecoinfo/902.htm
Also, what ECOs have you go for TCPIP 5.0a? As far as I can recall, there were quite a number of PPP fixes in ECO3
http://ftp.support.compaq.com.au/pub/ecoinfo/ecoinfo/387.htm
Regards,
Duncan

Re: VMS 7.2-1 & PPP
This PPP configuration works on V7.3 (with an unspecified IP stack) and not on V7.2-1 with the TCP/IP Services V5.0A stack?
Ok.
Do you have the virtual terminal support configured and enabled? (That was a prerequisite for for PPP, IIRC.)
As for the software, neither of these pairings is supported by HP, so if there's no ECO around for OpenVMS and if you're current on the TCP/IP Services V5.0A ECO (and Virtual Terminals) are enabled), then the creation of a new ECO for this problem from HP would be unlikely. (The only and the next-higher OpenVMS release in this general range of releases that retains HP support and sees ECOs is V7.3-2, with its associated IP release.)
I'd tend to suggest an upgrade (and preferably also to a consistent release and configuration across the various deployments), or I'd move to an external IP routing device if the host configuration cannot be upgraded. Alternatively, bring up DECnet or another protocol on the Linux box, or a local router that can establish a network connection through PPP or SLIP or other such. (I'd not tend to spend a whole lot of time troubleshooting IP/PPP with a box that was running software that was released as a contemporary of Microsoft Windows 98, barring some sort of specific local administrative requirements, that is.)
This is probably not the answer you want.

Re: VMS 7.2-1 & PPP
Silly question but if it was working, why did it get changed? Can you put it back the way it was before? Upgrading to a supported version is usually a good idea, especially if this is for a business requirement.
If it helps, TCPIP 5.1 was supported on VMS 7.2-1, consider upgrading TCPIP and installing patches. TCPIP 5.1 ECO 5 is available here on under the "Maintenance and support for Compaq products" link or ftp.itrc.hp.com.

Re: VMS 7.2-1 & PPP
We provide a turn-pike application running on Alpha/VMS systems to customers - and have done for many years and previously on VAX's and PDP-11's - to support our control systems using our own proprietry comms. We've recently made the move to using IP comms over mostly fixed circuits but occasionally we need a dial-up (PPP) connection.
We've got it all working on recent Alpha systems running 7.3-2 up to 8.0+ and now we're wanting it on older systems.
I'm recommending to our powers-that-be to upgrade anything older than 7.3-2 to 8.?? to acquire full TCP/IP & PPP functionality.
Thanks all for your help, and I'm marking this as closed.
