hp cd-writer plus 9110i freeze

Sometimes after my computer has been on for some time, the cd drive quites functioning. I'll put a disk in and watch the green light flicker on and off until it goes red and refuses to work. I can only burn something if I put in a cd right after I restart in my drive. Is this a firmware problem or what? I have windows xp and use the driver that came with xp. What could be a good fix to this?

Sound to me like the drive has automatically triggered overheat protection.

Is it crowded? If you can move something from directly beneath it might help. It's in the hottest place in there.

Also, im not sure but there may be an HP driver disc for that OS, maybe not. If there is buy it, usually 10 bucks. worth it.

1. Checks that all fans are working and are up to speed in the case.
2. Take temp inside case. If the motherboard has a health monitor check the temp. Inside case should be about 104 at worst.
3. Touch the CD drive. Too hot to touch is too hot to run.
4. Use a CD cleaner
5. Put that CD in and after an hour take it's temp. If the drive is running hot it will reflect in the temp of the CD.
