bios dates

I am supporting an old 486 prosignia VS. The system has been running ok since Y2k except for the date. We had some software that was not Y2k compliant so we set the date backwards every year so the software would still run. The system is running Novell 3.12. We are updating some of the non-compliant software now and I would like to set the date correctly. Novell allows me to change the date once it is up but after a boot the system date comes up as 1988. Is the bios of this system as it was originally sold Y2K compliant? I know we have not done any bios updates.
