DL380 - Replacing drives in a RAID 5 confuguration with higher RPM units

Hi

Does anyone know if it is OK to replace 10,000 RPM drives in a RAID 5 configuration with 15,000 RPM drives on a DL-380 G3? My idea is to change one at a time without powering down.... The capacity of the drives (73gig) would be the same.

Thanks for any help.

Re: DL380 - Replacing drives in a RAID 5 confuguration with higher RPM units

Hello Diarmaid,
A big NO. Please do not remove the drives while the system is up and running. Those drives are Hot pluggable and not Hot Unpluggable. Just bring the system down and swap one drive. Once that finishes rebuilding then do the same thing for the rest. Please make sure you have a full backup before attempting this change.

Regards,

Sulin,
Why is it a "BIG NO"? Please explain. The rotational speed of the disk will have no effect on the operation which he wishes to perform.
And what was the statement "Those drives are Hot pluggable and not Hot Unpluggable" suppose to convey? He obviously has 3 or more disk to created the RAID5 therefore they must be pluggable disks.

Hello,
Hot unpluggable means while the system is up and running until unless the HDD shows amber or red you cannot just pull it out or else you get data corrupted. And this is based on personal experience.
