Doubt with RAID on DL360 Gen 10 server

Hello, I have an HPE DL360 Gen10 server. I have an array of two 2.4TB SAS HDDs that form a RAID 1 in the first two hard drive bays (operating system). Now I have bought two more identical hard drives to have 4 in total and make a raid 10, but these are in the last two bays of the server, since the other bays are occupied by a raid 5 (4 hard drives, for data).
The initial scheme is as follows: raid1 (first 2 bays), raid5 (next 4 bays for data), raid 1 (new hard drives purchased to make raid 10 with the first 2 bays).
Can I physically move the hard drives to have the 4 operating system raid10 hard drives together and then the other 4 of raid 5?
Can I create raid 10 without losing the data from raid 1 of the operating system?
I need help, what do you recommend I do?
The controller is: HPE Smart Array S100i SR Gen10 SW RAID

Re: Doubt with RAID on DL360 Gen 10 server

Dear  JoseLuisCMQ

To convert your current RAID 1 setup to a RAID 10 (with 4 identical 2.4TB SAS HDDs) without losing data, you will need to follow a procedure that allows for data migration without affecting the existing data. You can approach this using the HPE Smart Storage Administrator (SSA) or a similar management tool.

IMPORTANT!!

  1. Its important to backup your data first before performing any disk operations. Even though you want to preserve data, thereтАЩs always a risk when manipulating disk arrays.
  2. Verify that the two new hard drives are properly installed and recognized by the server. Ensure all 4 drives (the 2 original ones and the 2 new ones) are the same model and size.
  3. Make sure your HPE RAID controller firmware and SSA tool are up-to-date, as older versions might not support seamless RAID 1 to RAID 10 migrations.

Steps:

  • Boot into the HPE Smart Storage Administrator (SSA) or the HPE Array Configuration Utility (ACU) during server startup.
  • You can typically access the RAID controller utility during POST by pressing a specific key (e.g., F8, F9, or Ctrl + R, depending on your configuration).
  • In SSA or ACU, view the current RAID 1 array configuration. You should see two 2.4TB drives in the RAID 1 array.

NOTE: HPE controllers support converting a RAID 1 to a RAID 10, but this process may vary depending on the RAID controller model. Check your specific controller's capabilities. Some HPE controllers offer a non-destructive migration from RAID 1 to RAID 10, but it can depend on the exact model and firmware version.

  • In the RAID utility, select the RAID 1 array you want to expand, and look for an option to convert to RAID 10.
  • Typically, the RAID utility will guide you through selecting the additional drives and creating a RAID 10.
  • Ensure the conversion is set to non-destructive so that your data is retained on the original drives while the new RAID 10 array is created.
  • You will need to specify the 2 new hard drives as part of the RAID 10 configuration. The system will combine the existing RAID 1 array with the 2 new drives, resulting in a RAID 10 configuration that mirrors the data across 2 pairs of disks.

Steps are given above, but make sure to get full backup before proceding the steps. or you can also do this by deleting of RAID1 volume and re creating RAID volume of 1+0 with existing and new HDDs and deploy OS and tools.

Hope, I could provide you with clear and helpful instructions. If you have any more questions or need further assistance, don't hesitate to ask.

Have a great day!!

Re: Doubt with RAID on DL360 Gen 10 server

Hello @rabindra11sharm  , thanks for the answer.

Thank you very much, is there any problem if the first two hard drives are in the first two drive bays, and the other two are in the last drive bays? There are 8 drive bays in total.
