Help Needed: HP ProLiant DL360p Gen8 CPU Compatibility - Unable to Boot with Xeon E5-2697

Hello everyone,

I've encountered an issue and would appreciate some advice. I have an HP ProLiant DL360p Gen8 server, which has been running smoothly. Recently, I replaced the CPU with an Intel Xeon E5-2697 v2, but after the replacement, the server won't boot. Here are the details:

  1. Server Model: HP ProLiant DL360p Gen8
  2. Previous CPU: Intel Xeon E5-2603 v2
  3. New CPU: Intel Xeon E5-2697 v2
  4. Issue: After replacing the CPU, the server won't start. The power light is on, but there's no response, and the fans do not spin.
  5. Current BIOS Version: P71 05/24/2019

I've tried the following steps, but the problem persists:

  • Confirmed that the CPU is correctly installed, with no bent pins, and the heatsink is properly attached.
  • Updated the BIOS to the latest version.
  • Cleared the CMOS.
  • Checked and reinstalled the memory modules.
  • Ensured that the power supply is adequate and all connections are secure.

I would like to know:

  • What is the maximum CPU that the HP ProLiant DL360p Gen8 supports?
  • Has anyone successfully used the Intel Xeon E5-2697 v2 with this server?
  • Any other suggestions to resolve this boot issue?

If the Intel Xeon E5-2697 v2 is not compatible with this server, what is the highest CPU that can be used with this server?

Thank you for your help!

Re: Help Needed: HP ProLiant DL360p Gen8 CPU Compatibility - Unable to Boot with Xeon E5-2

Hi @kuukitora ,

  • What is the maximum CPU that the HP ProLiant DL360p Gen8 supports?
Yes, Maximum two processors will be supported on DL360p Gen8 server.

  • Has anyone successfully used the Intel Xeon E5-2697 v2 with this server?
I have not tested, but as per the quickspecs it will be supported.
  •
  • Any other suggestions to resolve this boot issue?
    a. Mixed mode of processors will not be supported. Install the same model of processors in both sockets.
    b. distribute the DIMMs in equal slots of the processors.
    c. clear the CMOS and make the factory default by DP switch or Jumper swtich.
    d. Check out the power supply, DIMM and other devices are working fine. otherwise, run the system with minimal hardware.

    Regards,
    Shiva_JR

Re: Help Needed: HP ProLiant DL360p Gen8 CPU Compatibility - Unable to Boot with Xeon E5-2

@shiva_jr Thank you for the suggestions. I tried installing only the 2697v2 processor with the memory, but the server still won't boot. In iLO, the processor details still show the 2603v2. I also tried clearing the CMOS and restoring factory settings, but it didn't help.

I have checked the power supply, memory, and other devices, and they are working fine. When I immediately replace the 2697v2 with the 2603v2, the server boots up right away, and the display works normally.

Thank you for your help. Do you have any other suggestions?

Re: Help Needed: HP ProLiant DL360p Gen8 CPU Compatibility - Unable to Boot with Xeon E5-2

Dear kuukitora

I can see that earlier you are using Intel® Xeon® E5-2609 v2 Proc which is a entry level Proc running with 1333MHz DDR3 memory, 6Qty system FAN. 460W Common Slot Gold Hot Plug Power Supply. after replacing proc Intel® Xeon® E5-2697 v2, you have cleared CMOS, and upgrading BIOS firmwares.  Please note that you had upgraded proc from entry level to performance level proc Intel® Xeon® E5-2697 v2 which requaired 1866MHz DDR3 memory, 8Qty FAN, HP 750W Common Slot Platinum Plus Hot Plug Power Supply. Also I suggest that update all firmware codes for smooth operation. earlier from my team  shiva_jr already share quickspec with you. you also can check it inpage no 17 for performance model supported hardwares.

Hope my suggetions will help you to understand and resolve your server issue.

Re: Help Needed: HP ProLiant DL360p Gen8 CPU Compatibility - Unable to Boot with Xeon E5-2

@rabindra11sharm Dear

Thank you for your detailed response. I appreciate the information you've provided regarding the requirements for the Intel® Xeon® E5-2697 v2 processor.

I would like to clarify: is it absolutely necessary to use the 750W power supply for the server to boot with the 2697v2 processor, or is it possible for the server to boot with the 450W power supply?

Thank you for your assistance.

Best regards,

Re: Help Needed: HP ProLiant DL360p Gen8 CPU Compatibility - Unable to Boot with Xeon E5-2

Dear  kuukitora

It is recomended from HPE, to use  Intel® Xeon® E5-2697 v2 processor you have to install 750W PSU. if you wants to use 450 W PSU, it might be getting the server power on, but you may face lots of troubles and challanges in future. So, Please use recomended configuration only for better performance.

Re: Help Needed: HP ProLiant DL360p Gen8 CPU Compatibility - Unable to Boot with Xeon E5-2

Dear

Thank you for your detailed response. I appreciate the information you've provided regarding the requirements for the Intel® Xeon® E5-2697 v2 processor.

I have switched to a 1200W Platinum power supply and installed the 2697V2 CPU with 32GB of 1866MHz memory, but the server still won't boot. However, when I switch back to the 2603 CPU, it boots up immediately.

I have carefully reviewed my system details:

  • Original CPU: E5 2603 (non-V2)
  • Product Name: ProLiant DL360p Gen8
  • Server Serial Number: **confidential info erased**
  • Product ID: 646900-AA1
  • System ROM: P71 05/24/2019
  • System ROM Date: 05/24/2019
  • Backup System ROM: P71 12/14/2012

Is there any additional procedure required to upgrade from an E5 2600 to an E5 2600 V2 processor?

Thank you for your assistance.

Dear  kuukitora

I think earlier I was mentioned that as per your current PROC it need to upgrade PSU 750W, 1866MHz DDR3 DIMM, 8 FANs. Please check your server configuration. If possible, Please share IML log to check actual issue.

Re: Help Needed: HP ProLiant DL360p Gen8 CPU Compatibility - Unable to Boot with Xeon E5-2

Dear

I have found that my Product ID: 646900-AA1 does not support V2 CPUs. Only Product IDs starting with 7 support V2 CPUs.

Thank you for your help.
