Hello!
So I am running my Proliant with HPE custom Esxi image. I run 5 Slackware VM's and all is good. I installed an NVIDIA Grid K2 video card and boots into VMware fine. I set the nvidia to pass through mode. On any given vm when I select "add pci" and add the nvidia and boot, the HP Proliant fans run top speed loud and never stops until/unless I shut down the vm.
I just have no idea what or why the Proliant is going crazy cause of the video card... If it did it from boot I'd get it maybe defective, but it only does it when Linux or any vm boots and loads it.
In Bios I see nothing pertaining to video or fans that would have anything for me to change. I am running latest bios for HP Proliant and the 7.0 2 Esxi.
Any help?

Re: Query: HPE Proliant DL380 Gen 9 Fans go CRAZY with add-on video card
I find this weird. I clearly read it wrong but I swear I went on and read DL380 Gen 9 supported products and it said the card I have. Now when I look it shows HP NVIDIA GRID K1 Quad GPU PCIe graphics accelerator as only GRID.
How weird!

You can set a power policy via the iLO configuration. By setting the CPU power modes to lower settings, the fans may also spin down accordingly.

Maybe I am taking it too literal but after logging in via iLO, I canтАЩt exactly find those settings pertaining to your response.

What power setting are you using (look in ILO under Power Management tab -> Settings)?
Maybe it is set at static high performance?
Use the dynamic power savings mode.

I assume I do not need to reboot each change?

Try options one by one and full reboot.
If problem same try this,
HP AMD FirePro W7100 Accelerator Kit J0H10A

Re: HPE Proliant DL380 Gen 9 Fans go CRAZY with add-on video card
For now I will hold off on a video card but am curious about the card you mentioned; What is the purpose of having external HDMI Ports on it?
I assume it could be used as the default video card and bypass the onboard, but what of the 3 other inputs? Could they be dedicated to VMтАЩs themselves?

Re: HPE Proliant DL380 Gen 9 Fans go CRAZY with add-on video card
When the ADDON card is installed, do I need to install any firmware/drivers or will the OS I install do that?
One thing I am greatly confused over is under vmware management and I select "devices that support passthrough' why does my video card list 4?
Do I enable all four and add all four to the VM? Or does it simply mean that video card can support 4 different VM's?
I do not know which one to enable or disable.
Also an acquaintance of mine lent me a K1 Grid card. Same thing. I power on Vm and all is fine and when it fully boots all fans go screaming to no end until I shut vm down.

Re: HPE Proliant DL380 Gen 9 Fans go CRAZY with add-on video card
Each of those might be different outputs on the card (HDMI and displayport).
I don't know of any fixes for the fan issue. These server platforms appear to have certain "trigger" hardware for mandatory high airflow and apparently you're dealing with one. Is your server located in a datacenter? Lab server? Homelab?

SolutionFigured it out.
What threw me off was that the fans made no noise until Linux {fully} booted. What I mean is at it booted and loaded everyhting it was all fine.
Needless to say, it turned out to be the default installed nouveau driver.
So... Just wanted to update that in case anyone installs Linux using pass through GRID K1 and ZOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM goes fans. Keep it {GRID} disabled and remove nouveau then enable GRID and go from there.

I apologize I never saw this!
It is a home LAB type thing... But I did figure it out.
