ILO 5 - HTML5 console keyboard problem - multible characters instead of on character

Hello,

we have problems with password entry in the HTML5 console of a Linux server.

Some characters are interpreted multiple times during the input. E.g. the password secret123 becomes secccccret111111111233

If you have a complex and long password, there is almost no chance to log in successfully. We observe this on several ProLiant DL380 Gen10 systems no matter which browser we use (Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome, MS Edge).

Whats worng and what can we do to solve this? A short and simple passwort for the Linux system is not the solution...

BTW: Its not just a problem with Linux servers also with Windows server but but there I can make the password visible and correct it.

Thanks
Jan

Hi,

I hope its not the keyboard or KVM issue.

What is the iLO5 firmware version, its a good practice to keep it updated.

Thank You!

Re: ILO 5 - HTML5 console keyboard problem - multible characters instead of on character

hello,

thank you for the hint. The firmware is up to date. The keyboard works fine.

I have since tried further to analyze the problem. Normally we work remotely on the systems and use the "fastviewer" for that. I have tried a test connection now with "TeamViewer" and the problem does not occur with it.

But I don't understand why the duplication of the characters only occurs in the ILO console.

I will now contact the fastviewer support.

Thank you

Jan

This is not a new issue, nor is it unique to some flavor of the ILO 5 firmware.

I have seen this happen with every generation of the ILO, regardless of browser (IE, Edge, Chrome, Firefox) and version of said browser.  The OS on the target server doesn't matter either.  Nor does it matter if you're using HTML, .NET, or Java to connect.  I've been swearing at it for >15 years.

There are only two things I've seen mitigate the issue at all: 1) A faster connection.  The slower your connection to the ILO, the worse the problem is.  2) Typing whatever text you're trying to input slower.

Re: ILO 5 - HTML5 console keyboard problem - multible characters instead of on character

I have this issue , too. I'm on "iLO 5 v2.72 Sep 04 2022" version.  I access the ILO over a VPN connection , and I get the repeating character issue to the point that I cannot remotely manage the server using the HTML5 console.

I'm on Mac so .Net and Java are not options ( though I tried to get Java web start to work ) .

The worse symptom is when I type a command like "ip route show" and it behaves like I'm holding down the enter key.,

I have to close the console and reopen it to regain control. It happens about every other command, so when you have a system booted via a live cd to troubleshoot network access, you don't get very far!

I'm going to try setting up a window 10 VM and see if the .Net console works any better, but I don't have high hopes at this point.

Update: I was unable to setup a VM on my Mac, so I can try the .Net console.  The issue is intermittent as I didn't encounter it on the same ILO yesterday, but today every other press of the enter key caused the scrolling bug. Closing and re-opening the HTML5 console fixed the issue, until I pressed the enter key again ( I was in web console editing /etc/network/interfaces file on the remote host to get it network accessible ).

Re: ILO 5 - HTML5 console keyboard problem - multible characters instead of on character

Greetings!

Please attempt to establish a direct connection between your laptop and the iLO port and investigate the issue. If no problems are observed when connecting directly via a peer-to-peer iLO connection, it's possible that the issue is related to the network. However, please make sure that the iLO firmware is up to date as well.

Re: ILO 5 - HTML5 console keyboard problem - multible characters instead of on character

Hello.

Yes, I can confirm that there are no problems with a direct connection. ILO is up to date, as described at the beginning.

What I notice is that the doubling of characters only occurs in the ILO console. It does not occur in the input line of the same browser or in other applications on the same server I am connected to.

Remote connection actually means a connection from site to site via VPN. Software such as FastViewer and Teamviewer are used for this. There are also differences depending on the product. With Teamviewer, for example, the duplication is very rare and not so pronounced. That's why I now use Teamviewer in this scenario

But again, even if I use FastViewer, the problem only occurs in the ILO Console, not in any other application on the same server.

Re: ILO 5 - HTML5 console keyboard problem - multible characters instead of on character

Greetings!

If the problem doesn't occur with a direct connection to iLO, there may be an underlying issue, potentially related to the network or the application, as you have narrowed down.

Re: ILO 5 - HTML5 console keyboard problem - multible characters instead of on character

This behaviour is well-known and it was never resolved, even in iLOs with 2023.09+ updates.

Doubling/triiiiiipllllllinggg symbols makes entering complex passwords a nightmare. Of course, there is no copy / paste, virtual keyboard, or a "send command" functionality. You have to type. And re-type. Slow. No, even slower.

The problem appears also with commands, which output is more than a single page. As stated above, ip address, ip route, ip link etc. are practically unusable without filtering. Remember, there is no scrollback, you can't go up to see the output.

root@localhost#

root@localhost#

root@localhost#

root@localhost#

root@localhost#

root@localhost#

#Examples:

- A simple "ip a" or "ip link" outputs the interfaces and then behaves like you've hitted Enter 20-30 times.

- "ip a | less" sometimes (but not too often) makes it through and stops after the first page.

- "ip a | grep bond0" works every time as expected.

The only partial solution, at least for me, is to apply some filters to the expected result, and not use too complex passwords.

I also have this issue with the HTML5 terminal/console. Also when connecting on a mac. the network speed is not the problem all network hardware is on the desk in front of me and cat8 patched together with a 40gbe switch. 100% a problem with the HTML5 interface

Its 2025 and we're still having this problem, and HPE keeps saying "ThErE mUsT bE a NeTwOrK iSsUe!!!1"

Get a grip HPE, your tooling is really poor compared to your competition. Don't get me started on OneView.
