ML380 G6 Server - how to power?
I got a ML380 G6 Server (with redundant power - 02 power supply) + 01 UPS + MDU + Power strip.
Could someone tell me the sequence of connecting this all together?
many Thanks

Re: ML380 G6 Server - how to power?
Anything else in between depends on your needs.
Which MDU? The MDU adds several issues.
1. It adds an SPF to the setup.
2. Does it have enough capacity to power this and any other server that you might connect.
3. How does it connect to the UPS, does it receive enough power from the UPS (it only gets whatever the UPS outlet is capable of)
Alternatively

Re: ML380 G6 Server - how to power?
There is another server but it has a seperate MDU.
Yes UPS has enough power for the server because it came with the server.
Have a look at the attahced file. Thats the way I have planned to connect these together.
Any comments?
Sorry what is "It adds an SPF to the setup"?
Many Thanks

Re: ML380 G6 Server - how to power?
Actually in your diagram you have two SPFs, The MDU and the power strip.
Not use how useful the MDU is in this case, it monitors only *one* line the line that feeds the power strip. You have no visibility to anything else after that.
Also the power strip is superfluous in your diagram. Why not connect one port from the MDU to the UPS and another port to the server.
Somehow I don't like this set up either, does the UPS have a monitoring option via a LAN interface? If so I would not use the MDU.

Re: ML380 G6 Server - how to power?
many Thanks for the reply.
Well i forgot to that the tape drive need a power connection. So the power strip is used for 03 devices.
Yes I have the connection to the UPS via serial port & i can rememebr there was a ethernet port as well.
What is the best way to connect this?
What the purpose of this MDU?
I got another server & the connection diagram is the same as I attached before. thats why I thought of use the same thing.
many Thanks

Re: ML380 G6 Server - how to power?
An MDU is like an intelligent power strip. You can connect to the MDU over the network and power off/on any outlet on it. It is useful when you want to power cycle a hung device (server, tape drive)remotely.
I personally would not use an MDU. I don't know your environment or why the existing installation uses an MDU, maybe there is a good reason for it. Ask around if they use the MDU for something and if it is useful.
Today's servers utilize the iLO which is like an MDU inside the server. The iLO is a separate subsystem in the server box and can reset/reboot/power-on-off the server.

Re: ML380 G6 Server - how to power?
Sorry the unit is a HP PDU Power distribution strip (Small black box).
This has a 02 outlets.
So on the picture pls replace the MDU with PDU.
Appologise again!
Thanks

Re: ML380 G6 Server - how to power?
Also is the UPS racked with the server and dedicated to this server and its peripherals?
Then the wiring diagram is fine. If the UPS fails, the server will run from raw power.
Alternatively and more commonly, the UPS is connected *directly* to raw power (not from the PDU) and both server outlets are connected to the UPS. A small power strip is then connected to the UPS to power several small devices together, tape, disk, monitor etc.

Re: ML380 G6 Server - how to power?
The power strip can be connected to ten PDU or UPS sockets
Also is the UPS racked with the server and dedicated to this server and its peripherals?
Yes

Re: ML380 G6 Server - how to power?
What you or the server/datacenter manager need to do is look at the wiring options and determine what you need to protect against. Then decide which wiring method is best for you. Maybe because of previous mishaps, there is a certain sensitivity to specific component failures and you have to protect against those failures more than others. Based on your diagram, they don't trust the UPS at that site.
