Single RAID10 array with 16 SAS on DL 380p g8
Hi
My seller can't provide me an answer to my question - can i build single raid10 logical volume with 16 sas discs.
He told me i need 2 controllers 420p for 8 discs per controller.
In this case i will get 2 independent arrays, but i need only one with all of my discs.
Is this true?
server i looking for is 662257-421

Re: Single RAID10 array with 16 SAS on DL 380p g8
All disks must be on the same controller, for an array.
So you must use a controller that support 16 disks or more.
The P420 support up to 27 internal disks, according to quickspecs.
The 380P Gen8, can be configured for up to 25 internal disks.

Re: Single RAID10 array with 16 SAS on DL 380p g8
All HP DL380p gen8 servers have one embedded P420i controller.
If you want to use 16 disks you are using one of the following:
1. Server with Drive Cage - 25 SFF (with built-in expander). In this situation all drives are driven off of the
embedded P420i controller. So you do not have to buy second controller.
2. Server with Drive Cage - 8SFF + 8SFF drive cage optional. In this case an additional storage controller is required. HP recommends the HP Smart Array P420/1GB FBWC 6Gb 2-ports Int SAS Controller (P/N 631670-B21).
You can read about it in quickspec for DL380p gen8.

Re: Single RAID10 array with 16 SAS on DL 380p g8
hi
there is a 25 disk model with a sas expander on the backplane and a single cage.
in your case (2 cages) there is no way.
up to g7 there is an HP sas expander card - which is not supported in gen8 models.
you could go for a hw/sw config.
use a raid 1+0 in each cage and use the OS to combine them with raid 0.
it is possible - however, i personally do not like mixed hw/sw raid configs.
best regards from germany

Re: Single RAID10 array with 16 SAS on DL 380p g8
@ernst limbrunner Thank you very much for the explanation. I was also looking at this on google but didn't found the explanation you wrote which is what i am looking for. I bought also a second Harddrive bay with a extra raid controller 420 and was looking around if this is possible wo manage both Harddrive cages to be used for one Raid but this you answered already.
Best Regards,
Kolti
