Termination

Client has an external scsi tape drive they want connected. I've not looked inside the system yet (it's their only web server). I believe they have a normal/default type of configuration...internal drive array, external scsi 2 connector available for scsi device(s). My question is: I think I need to, in order to connect tape drive, disable termination on the controller...and I'm guessing at this point that I'd do that by running the config utility...am I on the right track?

It's been a long time since I've worked with Compaq servers and I'd like to have some clue before I bring down their system.
TIA.

Re: Termination

The integrated NCR/Simbios SCSI controller does not support both internal and external devices at the same. Make sure nothing is connected to the internal SCSI controller. Then connect the required SCSI cable from the external SCSI port on the back of the system to the external tape drive SCSI connection. See this web page for the SCSI cable guidelines.

Since the tape drive unit is external, you will need to install a SCSI bus terminator on the extra SCSI port on the external SCSI tape drive unit. Then run the Compaq system configuration program. Verify that the tape drive is seen with the correct SCSI ID. The Compaq tape drives ship with the SCSI ID set to #6. Save the new hardware configuration to CMOS. Boot the system back to the OS and install the required tape drive driver. If the tape drive unit is a model from Compaq, download the required OS driver from this web address.
