ECU bios update

On a HP LH Plus 5/133.
I'd like to try to update the ECU (presumably it's the Config Utility). But am afraid of what I don't understand. What is ECU & where does it reside etc etc. Is there a url that'll set me straight???

Re: ECU bios update

The ECU (EISA Configuration Utility) controls the bios settings. It in itself is not the BIOS (Basic Input Output System). If you update the BIOS on you LH plus you have to get an ECU that is compatible with that version of BIOS. Here is the link to both the latest ECU and BIOS. http://h20004.www2.hp.com/keeper_rnotes/bsdmatrix/matrix50453.html
The ECU is the utility you have to use to configure the BIOS. Like going into F2 on a Phoenix BIOS system.
Just because I hate it when people assume I know an acronym EISA stands for Enhanced Industry Standard Architecture. It is the architecture of the older systems. PCI (Peripheral Component Interconnect) replaced it.

Re: ECU bios update

Thanks Brian,
But I access the ECU, with the EISA Configuration Utility Disks. Doesn't upgrading the disks I'm using upgrade the ECU???
sorry, probably a silly question BUT the only silly question is the not asked etc etc.

Re: ECU bios update

The ECU and BIOS need to be on the same version in order for them to work. That is why you must update the BIOS to the version on the link given. Newer ECU are not compatible with older BIOS.

Re: ECU bios update

Yes it would update the ECU but the ECU is not stored on the computer anywhere. You would then have a floppy with a newer version ECU. You can upgrade your ECU but if the version of ECU and the version of BIOS on the system are not compatible you may have problems. The best thing to do is update your bios. When you get a bios flash for a system you should get the ECU that is on the same page as the BIOS update that way you should be assured compatibility.

Re: ECU bios update

You don't offically "upgrade" the ECU. There are just newer versions available. The ECU is stored on the diskette, so technically to upgrade the ECU, all you do is create the diskette. The BIOS needs to be updated to the matching version in order to use this upgraded ECU. The only physical change to the system would be done from the BIOS upgrade.
