Netserver e45 NIC driver

I manage all IT functions for a non-profit company in Virginia. A Board member recently donated an HP e45 Netserver to us and it was running Win NT and was configured for their network. I reloaded the machine with Win95 so that I can use it as a workstation on our network. (We already have sufficient servers.) I need to find a driver for the NIC that will work w/Win 95 and HP support says they are not aware of any because it's not a supported configuration. They suggested that I post here since many of you have found ways to run nonsupported configurations before. Any assistance you can give will be much appreciated. This machine running as a workstation would be better than most other machines we have.

Another problem is that I do not have the key for the case so I can install a Win95 supported NIC. I'd appreciate any suggestions you have to work around this as well. Thanks!

Re: Netserver e45 NIC driver

Paula,

The default NIC in the E45 is the J3171A 10/100 TX.
In fact, HP does provide windows95 drivers for this NIC, but W95 is not supported on a netserver.
You can download the files from http://www.hp.com/cgi-bin/cposupport/swindex.pl?p=hpj3171a104533&l=en&c=SoftwareLAN

Select J3171A 10/100 TX PCi LAN Adapter Support Disk and follow the instructions in the MSwin95.txt file.

The keys for E45 servers are not unique, you can just use a key from any other netserver to open the case.

Re: Netserver e45 NIC driver

Marco, thanks so much for your quick response. I did as you suggested and thought I was in business until the installation got to the end and asked for the following files which I do not have: ndis\hptx.dos and nt\hptx.sy_. Do you have any idea how I can get those files? I tried searching the HP site but came up empty. Thanks again for your help!

Re: Netserver e45 NIC driver

Paula,

the files are all there!
Remember to rum the J3171A.exe with the -d option to create the appropriate directory structure.
Run setup /readme for intructions on installing the driver in windows 95:
Select:
- Installing HP 10/100TX PCI Lan Adapter Drivers
- Microsoft Network Drivers
- Windows 95

And print out the instructions.

Hope this helps.

Marco.

Re: Netserver e45 NIC driver

Marco, thanks for all your help w/this. I ran the file w/the switch and was able to get the installation to complete successful but the card still doesn't work. I'm thinking that it may be bad since the machine was donated and I think it sat for a while and was moved several times after they took it off their network. I'm now trying to find a source for a net server key since I have a Dell and a Compaq. I really appreciate your taking time to respond to my posts!

..You're welcome.

I you can't get the key elsewhere you can order it at HP, the partnumber is 5182-4534, I think the price is about 6$.

Re: Netserver e45 NIC driver

Thanks again! You are just a wealth of information. I wish I could just download your brain and have all that information! I really do appreciate your time. It saves us a lot of money for me to be able to get help like this w/o having to pay professional support techs here and that's so important in a not-for-profit organization.
