Configuring Paging

Hi,
I monitor 250+ servers with CIM. We used to have email notification set up but we shut it off because it was configured to alarm on ALL CRITICAL events. As you might imagine this caused hundreds and hundreds of pages of all sorts.

What we really want is to monitor Disk Integrity and usage. If the disk is degraded or failed we want it to page out our on call support with the Server name, physical disk and port and the status of the drive.
Currently when I go into the settings I do not have the functionality available to specify this detail.

Is there any way to configure CIM 7 SP2 to dig this deep and page out??
thanks in advance.

Re: Configuring Paging

You can curtail IM7 to only send out alerts based on just disk related issues as well as disk space thresholds. To get the level of detail you specified, create an email notification task and leave the message format as standard. then select the disk related query as the query you want to be notified on. Let me know if you need further help with this as to how to configure it.

Re: Configuring Paging

Thanks Jadrice,

Here is the problem I have. I go into my settings and configure a new email notification task. When I go to select the Disk related query I don't see a Disk related query. Is this possibly something I have to create....All the queries are preset in my list and they are all very generic (ie/ Events by server, Events by Status ect..)

Thanks again.

Re: Configuring Paging

Yep, You will need to create a custom query that includes the disk related items that you want to be notified on. I'm going to attach some screenshots on exactly how to do this. Look for them on my next posts.

Re: Configuring Paging

Login to IM7 and start by creating a new public query. The public will allow any other user logged into IM7 to see the query See attached screenshot).

Re: Configuring Paging

The next screen, you're creating a new category under public queries. Call it Events by Device Name and Severity or you can call it whatever you want. (See screenshot attached)

Re: Configuring Paging

After you create the category, go back to the event queries page. You should now see your new category. (See Screenshot)

Re: Configuring Paging

Now, in your new Event query category, Click on new to start creating your disk related query.

Here is the format we're going to follow and remember you can use this format for any other related queries that you would want to be notified for.
Notice the checkboxes that I have checked in the next screenshot and the query name. Follow what's in the screenshot

Events by cleared status: Not cleared
Events of severity: Critical, Major
Events of type: (when thecriteria configuration window appear, select storage and threshold only).

Devices by name: All servers <--- You will see this in my next post on the next screenshot.

Re: Configuring Paging

You should now have a total of 4 checkboxes selected. Now your query is complete. Click on Save and that will bring you back to the Event queries page.

Re: Configuring Paging

You should now have something similar to the atteched screenshot.

Re: Configuring Paging

Lets create the Notification task that will send out email based only on disk related failures and disk space threshold.

Go to Devices -> tasks

Re: Configuring Paging

In the notification task area, click on create a new notification then select email notifcation. in the next screen, put in the email address to the pager you will want to receive the notifications. in the subject line customize that to your liking. Leave message format as standard.

Re: Configuring Paging

In the next screen, provide a name for your notification task. Call it Disk related failures notification (See attached screenshot)then select the event query we've just created in that case "Disk related major and critical events. Then in the "Selected query and Schedule" window, select when "new devices or events meet the query criteria" <--- a window will appear to choose this. Then, click on save. Your pager notification is now complete. I would remove any existing or old notification you had giong to the pagers at that point. You will now receive only disk failures and disk space warning alerts. Make sure you setup up your disk space threshold though. If you don't define your diskspace threshold on each clients, you will not receive any alerts when the disks are full.

Re: Configuring Paging

You're using IM7 right? You should see be able to see both. Both has a litle folder icon that can be expanded next to them.

Re: Configuring Paging

I am using IM7 however the option for storage isn't there. I'm thinking there might be a back end DB thing we have to do? See my confusion??
